  • No-frills bike-friendly site on 10 acres of Forestry Commission land
  • In Cannock Chase, a 10-minute drive from Rugeley and the A51
  • Access to popular mountain bike paths, including Follow the Dog trail
Woods, wild terrain and some of the finest mountain biking trails in the Midlands – access to all of the above is to be had from Tackeroo Caravan Site in the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This Staffordshire park, set on Forestry Commission land, has pitches spread among the tall pine, spruce and evergreen trees. It’s got a wild feel – there are no showers, toilets or facilities in general, save for some rubbish bins and a waste disposal point to empty chemical toilets (which you’re required to bring if you want to stay here). Taps are on hand for filling up your water tank and bottle. It’s definitely worth lugging a mountain bike along on a trip to Tackeroo, which sits alongside the famed Follow The Dog trail, the Midlands’ first – and arguably still the best – dedicated mountain bike path. Outside peak camping season, the site hosts popular cycling-themed events and the area is a general hub for all things riding (head south for the Monkey Trail or north to explore Cannock Chase Country Park). It’s also around a mile or so to Birches Valley Forest Visitor Centre, a prime place to grab some tourist info brochures, get your bearings and make a plan for exploring the area. There’s a GoApe! activity centre, a Gruffalo nature trail for families and a decent little café as well. Oh, and more mountain biking trails of course…

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The first 5 minutes of arrival , lots of space and peace and quiet.

Disliked #1 The price ! £22 to stay in an open public park with no facilities or privacy.
#2 Being woken up to a football being kicked against my van.
#3 The amount of cyclists and members of the public congregating next to my van.
#4 No privacy whatsoever as campers are allowed to pitch wherever.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked I stayed here for one night as a stopover on way down to Devon and really enjoyed it. Beautiful surroundings, feeling of safety despite only 2 other vans on site. Huge, beautiful open space with trails all around, good basic facilities and very accessible to the motorway to continue my journey.

Local attractions

Once you’ve ridden around all the area’s excellent mountain biking trails several times, keep the adrenaline pumping while suspended high above the forest canopy at Go Ape Cannock (five minutes’ drive), an activity centre with almost 1,500 metres of tree-to-tree crossings. Less energetic dawdles in the area include dog-walking and orienteering trails. Other gentle ways to while away a day include wanders by the water at Fairoak Pools (five minutes) or fly fishing on the banks of Blithfield Reservoir (15 minutes). Amateur historians could amble around Castle Ring, an Iron Age site (15 minutes), while shoppers might prefer to dip in and out of the boutiques of Rugeley market town (10 minutes). If stately homes appeal, navigate your way to the National Trust’s Shugborough Estate (15 minutes), a huge Georgian building with a walled garden. Into flexing your creativity? Check out Ingestre Hall, a Grade II-listed 17th-century Jacobean mansion and the UK’s only dedicated Residential Arts Centre (20 minutes).
