  • No-frills bike-friendly site on 10 acres of Forestry Commission land
  • In Cannock Chase, a 10-minute drive from Rugeley and the A51
  • Access to popular mountain bike paths, including Follow the Dog trail
Woods, wild terrain and some of the finest mountain biking trails in the Midlands – access to all of the above is to be had from Tackeroo Caravan Site in the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This Staffordshire park, set on Forestry Commission land, has pitches spread among the tall pine, spruce and evergreen trees. It’s got a wild feel – there are no showers, toilets or facilities in general, save for some rubbish bins and a waste disposal point to empty chemical toilets (which you’re required to bring if you want to stay here). Taps are on hand for filling up your water tank and bottle. It’s definitely worth lugging a mountain bike along on a trip to Tackeroo, which sits alongside the famed Follow The Dog trail, the Midlands’ first – and arguably still the best – dedicated mountain bike path. Outside peak camping season, the site hosts popular cycling-themed events and the area is a general hub for all things riding (head south for the Monkey Trail or north to explore Cannock Chase Country Park). It’s also around a mile or so to Birches Valley Forest Visitor Centre, a prime place to grab some tourist info brochures, get your bearings and make a plan for exploring the area. There’s a GoApe! activity centre, a Gruffalo nature trail for families and a decent little café as well. Oh, and more mountain biking trails of course…

Liked A wonderful peaceful forest park with ample walks. visitor centre with coffee shop 15 minutes walk away. Museum and children's play park 15 minutes walk. Great for mountain bike and walkers. Very helpful and friendly staff

Disliked Dogs are off the lead and caused a few issues with peeing everywhere and barking constantly.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Absolutely everything - the peace, quiet and surroundings. The warden was so helpful and informative, the setting was absolutely glorious, really lovely break - will definitely return!!!

Disliked Although one of the Elson points was out of order, there's another point to empty waste and water, though this is not a dislike - just a highlight of how much is on offer! Nothing to dislike - nothing at all!!!!

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked We liked the freedom to pitch wherever you want to among the trees (There is some hard standing available, if you prefer). There's lots of lovely paths through the woodland that have been surfaced with hardcore. A visitor centre is located within 15-20 minutes walk and serves teas, coffees and snacks. Although the site was busy at the weekend it was still relatively peaceful. There aren't any hookups, toilets or showers, but there is fresh water and somewhere to empty your loo.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Beautiful and scenic and can be peaceful

Disliked Unfortunately a group turned up with a petrol generator and ruin the peace and quiet, also petrol fumes were vile, this was sorted eventually by the warden, also cyclists don’t whisper in the morning so expect some early (7am) noise. I do realise this is a small minority causing problems but as cost the same as campsite with full facilities and rules in Devon it was disappointing

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The tranquility of the place as it's in the middle of a forest. The access to beautiful walks across the chase.

Disliked How unlevel the ground. Other than that the site is brilliant

Local attractions

Once you’ve ridden around all the area’s excellent mountain biking trails several times, keep the adrenaline pumping while suspended high above the forest canopy at Go Ape Cannock (five minutes’ drive), an activity centre with almost 1,500 metres of tree-to-tree crossings. Less energetic dawdles in the area include dog-walking and orienteering trails. Other gentle ways to while away a day include wanders by the water at Fairoak Pools (five minutes) or fly fishing on the banks of Blithfield Reservoir (15 minutes). Amateur historians could amble around Castle Ring, an Iron Age site (15 minutes), while shoppers might prefer to dip in and out of the boutiques of Rugeley market town (10 minutes). If stately homes appeal, navigate your way to the National Trust’s Shugborough Estate (15 minutes), a huge Georgian building with a walled garden. Into flexing your creativity? Check out Ingestre Hall, a Grade II-listed 17th-century Jacobean mansion and the UK’s only dedicated Residential Arts Centre (20 minutes).
