Nice night to go fishing on the pond

  • Family-run site with on-site fishing and a café
  • Steps from the Shropshire Union Canal
  • Adults-only and dog-friendly; canalside for dog walks
If you had thoughts on an ideal setting for a hol between England and Wales, Hadley Park might well be it. It's in the Shropshire countryside on the border with Wales, next to the Shropshire Union Canal, and a handsomely scenic walk from Whitchurch, Shropshire's oldest market town. Hadley Park is a family-owned and run site that's set up for adults only. It has a small pond where guests can fish – for a fee; a big sundeck overlooking the pond, and a fully licensed on-site café serving fresh local produce. You can also have your hair smartened up in the Hadley Park salon: just enquire when booking using the details in your booking confirmation email. Amenities include a launderette and a washing-up area; there's also a chemical disposal point, and a modern well-kept toilet and shower block with disabled facilities. The park is adults-only and welcomes well-behaved dogs. A service station with fast food and coffee outlet is 400 yards away.

The Kite 1 bedroom camping pod

Liked: Site is perfect for exploring nearby areas. Canal is just behind the site for walk to town. Shower block very clean, spacious and heated. Washing up facilities best ones I've ever seen. Includes also microwave, washing machine and dryer. Nice views over the pond and good sunsets. Joyce pod comes with everything you need for BBQ. Sleeping bag for extra comfort. Even has a heater if you're cold.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Pitch size - suitable for large tents, easy to drive in pegs and not waterlogged despite raining.
Cafe / Reception - pleasant staff to point out the pitches, give directions, etc.
Toilet block - bright and clean, though apparently the women's could have used the bin emptying.

Disliked: Road noise - close to busy road which is convenient but advise ear plugs if a light sleeper.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Showers and washing facilities very good. Hot water, clean and warm. Liked little hut near water, where you could sit and use the fire pit. We only stayed one night so didn’t get chance. Area by the water, great for tents with no ehu.

Disliked: We arrived after three, had emailed site, to ask pitch etc, no reply. Telephoned on the way, the chap I spoke to was very rude, and quite condescending. Saying that I wouldn’t have been able to book an electric hook up for one night, I insisted I had, and paid £35 for the privilege! We arrived and still didn’t really know where to pitch, so just parked in where we thought. A different man came to us, who was more friendly, said he was security on the site with the other rude chap. The site itself is mainly resident old caravans, you feel a bit like an imposter. But for one night it was okay.

Local attractions

Staying close to home from Hadley Park, the old Shropshire town of Whitchurch is less than a mile away, and the walks of the Sandstone Trail as well as the hacks of the Bishop Bennet Way are easily accessible via the Shropshire and Union Canal on site. Elsewhere, several famed Shropshire and Cheshire sights are within 20 miles of the park, like Chester Cathedral and the city's Roman ruins and amphitheatre; Chester Zoo and Chester Racecourse; the fab follies of Hawkestone Park, and the llamas, alpacas and 50 acres of greenery of Cholmondeley Castle Gardens. Nearby Shrewsbury is famed for its annual flower show and for its Darwin Trail commemorating the life and work of evolution dude Charles Darwin who was born in the town. More modernly, a good range of plays are held at the new Severn Theatre and several riverside pubs and restaurants are around at which to while the night away. The bars, cafés and independent shops of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Llangollen are within driving distance: other top town picks are a picnic in Riverside Park, a stroll along Victoria Promenade, and a steam straight ahead on the Llangollen Railway.
