  • Peaceful and spacious pitches in Rockingham Forest, Northamptonshire
  • Rutland Water and Burghley House both 20 minutes' drive away
  • Café next to the site; access to play areas and walking/bike trails
You’ll be following in some pretty famous footsteps when you stay at Fineshade Wood – this Northamptonshire site is tucked away among the ancient trees of Rockingham Forest, which was once a hunting ground for William the Conqueror. These days the forest is a fabulous destination for nature lovers – and now you’ll be able to make the most of your outdoor time by staying overnight too. Pitches here are well spaced and well kept, with access to simple facilities like toilets and a chemical disposal point. A warden is always on site to give a friendly welcome, help you settle in and offer any advice you may need. Once you’re all settled on your pitch, it’s time to explore – perhaps taking your dog for a wander along one of the winding walking trails or pedalling along one of the bike trails. A family trail and a mountain bike section are available, and you can hire bikes (or get them repaired) at the visitor centre. There are five fabulous play areas scattered around the forest too, plus a sensory garden and a hidden wildlife hide where you can watch quietly for passing birds. Handily, right next to the site is a courtyard café that’s open every day to serve up light meals, cakes, proper coffees and tasty gelatos – plus ice creams for holidaying dogs. You’re welcome to bring a barbecue along as well; pick up supplies at the shops in Corby or Stamford (both 15 minutes’ drive).

Disliked No shower facilities but this was advertised and didn’t really matter to us. And no WiFi. The signal on site wasn’t very good.

Liked Lovely quiet site, enjoyed having a children’s park just out of site but close enough for kids to access. Staff gave us choice of pitch when it wasn’t busy.Clean facilities.Lots of taps and disposal areas. Bike hire nearby and a cafe if wanted for ice creams mmmmm!

Disliked An additional charge for visitors although it was still cheaper than the car park next door.Had to pay for electric hook up even though we didn’t need or use it.

Liked Loved the pitch, other guests, the owners obviously take great pride in the site and want everyone to have a great stay.

We experienced all weathers this week and had no issues with drainage after the storms, finding shade under the trees was easy when it was 33c

Disliked Sometimes external people using the Fineshade Wood main carpark as a hangout were a little noisy at night, but it didn’t go on too late and is absolutely nothing to do with the campsite
