You’ll be following in some pretty famous footsteps when you stay at Fineshade Wood – this Northamptonshire site is tucked away among the ancient trees of Rockingham Forest, which was once a hunting ground for William the Conqueror. These days the forest is a fabulous destination for nature lovers – and now you’ll be able to make the most of your outdoor time by staying overnight too. Pitches here are well spaced and well kept, with access to simple facilities like toilets and a chemical disposal point (please note this site does not have showers). A warden is always on site to give a friendly welcome, help you settle in and offer any advice you may need. Once you’re all settled on your pitch, it’s time to explore – perhaps taking your dog for a wander along one of the winding walking trails or pedalling along one of the bike trails. A family trail and a mountain bike section are available, and you can hire bikes (or get them repaired) at the visitor centre. There are five fabulous play areas scattered around the forest too, plus a sensory garden and a hidden wildlife hide where you can watch quietly for passing birds. Handily, right next to the site is a courtyard café that’s open every day to serve up light meals, cakes, proper coffees and tasty gelatos – plus ice creams for holidaying dogs. You’re welcome to bring a barbecue along as well; pick up supplies at the shops in Corby or Stamford (both 15 minutes’ drive).

Schone, goed onderhouden camping in een bos, met veel wandel- en fietsmogelijkheden. Personeel wordt geprezen, net als ruime plaatsen en rust. Toiletgebouwen zijn schoon, maar douches en afwasplekken ontbreken. Soms geluid van nabijgelegen parkeerplaats.

Ik was blij met It was great, our first night staying in our converted ambulance.
The staff were lovely, the site was very organised, toilets were clean and tidy, pitches were large and well spread out, will be going again soon.

Ik was niet blij met Should have been great to have showers but nothing apart from that would have lowered my rating.

Ik was blij met Good sized pitch & decent facilities. Clean & tidy. Easy to find and good links to all town’s & attractions in the region. Very quiet in the evening for sleep.

Ik was niet blij met My fault but check entry access times as gates are normally padlocked until 7:30 so no early morning escape.

Ik was blij met This was my first time on this site in my Motorhome. I stayed here for 4 nights and was very impressed with everything they had to offer. Initially it was for 3 nights, but having arrived a day earlier, Mark and Donna, the site Managers, got me in with no problems. The site was very clean, organised and very peaceful. Along side the site was an independent, beautiful well run cafe. Excellent in fact, and open 7 days a week throughout the year. Next to the cafe, in the court yard is a shop for hiring bikes and scooters. Another big plus. If you’re an hiker and love tranquility, then this site is for you. The prices for staying on site, (in a Motorhome) are the lowest I have come across. Also take this into consideration, that the electric hook ups are included in the price. Other sites charge extra for this facility. Fantastic. All in all for me, this was an awesome stay, and will be returning in the near future.

Ik was blij met This was our first trip in our first caravan and we could not ask have asked for a better welcome and stay. The site is beautiful, clean and safe. A very relaxing stay and perfect for newbies.

Ik was niet blij met The only thing missing was a shower block, it was however very clear that there were not showers on site so it wasn’t a surprise.

Ik was blij met Staff and site were excellent, beautiful area.

Ik was niet blij met It seems to me just greedy to have to pay twice for a pitch, to pay extra to put up an awning on a pitch you have already paid for is just plain wrong. It's a shame because it spoiled an otherwise excellent few days.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Once you’ve rambled around Rockingham Forest, set off to see some of the other attractions around here – perhaps starting with Rutland Water (20 minutes’ drive), where you can walk or cycle around the lake, play crazy golf, hire watersports kit, go birdwatching and fishing or bounce across the assault course at Aqua Park Rutland (25 minutes). If that all sounds a bit exhausting, perhaps you’d prefer a gentle wander around one of the area’s grand buildings – Apethorpe Palace (15 minutes), Rockingham Castle (20 minutes) and Burghley House (20 minutes) are all close by and well worth putting on your schedule. Younger kids might not be up for all that, so a good alternative for them is Sacrewell Farm (15 minutes), where they can meet lots of friendly farm animals and scamper about at the playbarn. Meanwhile, if you’re on a grownup holiday, you may like to plan a tour of The Rutland Vineyard (10 minutes) – it hosts sessions on Friday evenings throughout the summer, with a guided tasting included.
