  • Family-run Lincolnshire farm with an aviation museum on site
  • A 10-minute drive from Sleaford and half an hour from Lincoln
  • Well-drained pitches with access to fields for dog walking
A flight simulator, a Vampire T11 nose cone and a full-sized military plane out in the courtyard… the list of facilities in place at Heath Farm Caravan Site is certainly a fairly unusual one. Then again, how often does one get to stay at a place that's also home to an aviation museum? (Not often is the answer… hence this place is likely to be a particular draw for folk fascinated by things that fly, or with an interest in military history). The museum in question is the Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre, set in the old buildings of Heath Farm and free to visit. The family-run farm and its museum is in the Lincolnshire countryside just outside the little village of North Rauceby and 10 minutes’ drive from Sleaford, a handy spot for heading out to Lincoln, Boston and other towns, visiting relatives up the road at RAF Cranwell or sticking to local lanes for strolls between villages (or village pubs…). If your travelling party features a mutt, there’s plenty of space for them to get out for a walk in the fields next door. Pitches here are on level well-drained land with access to electrical supplies.

Liked: A simple, basic site. Everything you needed at a very reasonable price. Clear directions & a sign at the entrance.
No showers but that is made clear in advance.
Plenty of space between the pitches.
A friendly, helpful welcome on arrival.
We plan to return to have a look at the Aviation Heritage Museum that is on the same site. Looks like there’s lots to see & do in the area.

Disliked: A small amount of road noise but only the person in the pop-top roof could hear it. Not enough to disturb us.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments and hope you return sometime to have a look at the Cranwell Aviation Museum.

Great stop off for overnight,or longer.

Liked: The site was spacious,The toilet area was very clean and washing area good too.Had a mix up with us pitching up on wrong peg/number my fault, but we sorted it with another customer helping us out.
Nice place to take dog out for walkies.
Owner made you feel welcome.

Disliked: The site has large trees overhanging especially the large horse chestnut tree next to pitch nearest the fence,it was a little bit windy so didn't fancy bits falling off,on our roof, also very shady.

Next door was Aviation museum, run by volunteer we wanted to pop in for drink cake, but as we had our dog with us,the lady on duty said no dogs allowed,we wanted to sit outside in area with tables,No can't do that either, unfortunately.
We wanted to support them but felt upset at her negative response,by the way, only one other couple in at that point.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments.
As I explained at the time, it didn't matter that you parked on a different pitch, it was the fact that you parked on one clearly allocated to someone else. The pitch you refer to is one of three on site that may be described as shady but all of them benefit from the sun later in the day as it moves around.
The Cranwell Aviation Museum is run by North Kesteven District Council, who operate a 'no dog' policy in all of their tourist attractions. We have no control over this and would hope this didn't influence your decision to only award your stay 8/10.

Described accurately as per web site. Clean facilities,(toilet). Some road noise during day but…

Local attractions

If you’ve picked this place mainly for its aviation element, why stop there? Turn your holiday into a themed break by heading out to see more flying machines and memorabilia at Newark Air Museum (20 minutes’ drive), playing with the interactive displays at International Bomber Command Centre (25 minutes) and taking a day to follow the North Kesteven Airfield Trail around the area’s many current and former air bases. Time for a break from the sky-based stuff? Skip into Sleaford (10 minutes’ drive) to visit the free museum, see the Cogglesford Watermill in action and follow the themed trails to uncover the town’s arty and historic corners. Or maybe you’d rather stick to things that move at ground level? If so, the Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum (half an hour) is a good place to start. You might also spot rather smaller things scuttling about on a walk at Hartsholme Country Park (35 minutes) or the Natural World Centre (35 minutes), which also has outdoor and indoor wildlife-themed adventure playgrounds for the kids.
