  • Gorgeous glamping site on a family-run farm in the Golden Valley
  • In Abbey Dore, 25 minutes’ drive from Hereford and Abergavenny
  • Private kitchen and shower/toilet facilities, barbecue and firepit
It won’t be much of a surprise when you realise you've become very fond of Pond and Beyond Glamping after a trip to this site on a family-run sheep farm. With fab views, pretty countryside surrounds, a peaceful atmosphere and a location in between the Brecon Beacons and the Wye Valley, it’s a stellar spot for holidays in Herefordshire. Stays here are in a bell tent circled by a fenced patch of land for privacy – and to keep wandering sheep away – with sleeping space for up to four people. Inside, the accommodation is furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, a kingsize bed and solar or battery lighting, plus there's access to an open-air hot shower and a compost toilet. Head outdoors to sit around the firepit and grill grub on the barbecue (the first bag of wood is provided, and more is available to buy on site). Each pitch has a gate leading to a field and roams by the river or games of rounders. Wander to Dore Abbey, a couple of minutes away, or take a longer lope to the greenery of Ewyas Harold Common (half an hour on foot). You could head to Hereford for kayak rental (25 minutes) and the Wye Valley for canoeing (35 minutes) or just amble on nearby trails through Golden Valley. The site has no electricity, so it’s a top spot for experiencing a digital detox in a wildlife-rich area with a relaxed atmosphere. Because it's off the grid, it’s worth packing a coolbox – the owner can freeze ice packs for you – and a power bank if you really do need to charge up your devices.

Dragonfly bell tent (no pets)

Liked: Large pitch with private facilities included warm shower, eco toilet and kitchen. Tiki style hut for escaping to in the damp weather. Large open space for the children to explore and not annoy fellow campers. We enjoyed watching the farmer at work, watching the progress of the field in front being turned over. Evenings in front of the fire pit with marshmallows and a hot chocolate.

Lilypad bell tent (pet friendly)

Liked: We have just returned from a two night stay and I have to applaud the family who own this small site. With only three tents and lots of space between, you are never disturbed by other campers. It was perfect in so many ways we really enjoyed our short trip. The location is fantastic, the bell tents are very clean and the mattresses extremely comfortable. The separate kitchen area has everything you need and as a keen BBQ fan, it was great to have one to use and not have to bring a small camping one with us. The toilet and outside shower are clean and fun. It did take some explanation to our two young girls how to use. We would love to return.

Lilypad bell tent (pet friendly)

Liked: Peaceful surroundings and a lovely private spot - pitch was the largest we've ever stayed on. Kitchen was well equipped with a gas stove and the treats left for us were a nice touch. Beds were super comfy and duvets were lovely and warm, even on a stormy night. We didnt see the owner during our stay but she made sure to text us on the morning of our arrival with all the details we needed - perfect.

Lilypad bell tent (pet friendly)

Liked: We had a lovely stay in Lilypad. Even though it rained quite a bit, the covered kitchen area meant we could still sit outside and enjoy a BBQ. Having our own toilet, which was lovely and clean, was great too. Mandy was very welcoming and the communication leading up to our arrival provided everything we needed. It was very quiet and even though there were guests in the other tents, we didn't hear them due to the distance between pitches. We'd definitely book again, just hopefully with better weather!

Disliked: Not a dislike, more of a suggestion. A picture/map of the site, showing where the beach and footpath were, would have been helpful.

Local attractions

This is an ace area for walks. Head out on hikes up to the nearby peaks of the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains – Ysgyryd Fawr and Sugar Loaf (25 and 30 minutes’ drive) are your best bets – or set off towards the gentler landscape of the Malvern Hills across the border in England (an hour). For organised activities, there’s paintballing within five minutes, along with animal-petting trips to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (35 minutes) for the younger members of your travel troupe. Take a leaf out of the literati’s book and visit Hay-on-Wye (half an hour) for its numerous second-hand shops selling antique novels and the like. Or browse the market stalls in the traditional town of Abergavenny and check out the legendary Mappa Mundi medieval map in Hereford.
