  • Quiet and scenic site with direct access to Forest of Dean footpaths
  • Clearwell Caves 15 minutes’ drive; Tintern Abbey half an hour
  • Dog exercise field and modern bathrooms; pubs a mile away
Fancy the chance to go walking in the woods without having to drive there first? Deanwood Caravan and Camping has direct access to footpaths taking you into the Forest of Dean – so it really could hardly be easier to get out and explore this gorgeous Gloucestershire scenery. Getting out for a walk might take you along woodland trails in search of local birds and wild animals – or it might involve heading up to Yorkley village, a mile away, which has a dog-friendly pub as well as a well-stocked shop (a handy place to pick up picnic supplies or something to throw on your barbecue back at base). Dogs are very welcome at this peaceful site, and they will have access to their own exercise field where they can have a good run around off lead. Other facilities include washing-up areas and access to a fridge, freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Toilets and showers are housed in a modern heated block so there’s no need to worry about chilly toes… The Forest of Dean is a fairly compact area, so pretty much all of its attractions are within a 10/15-minute drive; there’s also more to see and do over in the nearby Wye Valley National Landscape, including canoeing or just admiring spectacular river views at Symonds Yat (half an hour’s drive). Three miles away, the town of Lydney has various leisure facilities including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and is a handy source of shops, supermarkets and restaurants.

Foxglove Field powered grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful site, nice big pitches and the layout meant it was actually quite secluded. We were close to the toilets, which were very modern, clean and plenty of hot water. Location was great, access straight into the forest and not far from Lydney or Symonds Yat.

Disliked Perhaps a bit pricey, considering we were in a tent

Foxglove Field powered grass tent campsite

Liked Deanwood Caravan and Camping is a brilliant campsite right next to the Forest of Dean. The perfect spot to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature.
Our pitch was in the ideal place to watch the sunset every evening from our tent, and the view was honestly amazing.
The site itself is beautiful, with most pitches separated by tall hedges, and they even provide a large tile with mini legs next to each pitch for portable BBQs or other heat sources.
The facilities are very clean and well maintained.
We’ll definitely be revisiting this site.

Disliked The only small issue for us was that our pitch wasn’t very level. It was on a slope. The pitches are a great size, but we set our tent closer to the back hedge where the slope felt steeper, so by morning we’d slid down to the lower end of the bedroom. Pitching a bit further forward would have reduced the slope. Just mentioning it so the next guests can plan their tent position a little better.

Beech Row powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We actually stayed on Bluebell field as we didn't have a breathable groundsheet, but we're really glad we did as the views were stunning and it was very quiet.
Showerblock & site generally were really clean.
Could walk straight into woodland from site.
Managers were really helpful & friendly.
Great location for exploring the Forest of Dean area.

Disliked This is a minor 'picky-ness' - at the weekend the site filled up and 2 basins in the ladies loos (in the main block) weren't quite sufficient - but there were plenty of showers so that was great.

Local attractions

Sights in the Forest of Dean include Clearwell Caves (15 minutes’ drive), an underground system of nine natural caverns that were mined for iron ore from Roman times until well into the 19th century; and Puzzlewood (15 minutes), an area of ancient woodland laced with paths. Both sites have been used as settings for various episodes of ‘Doctor Who’. A former prison built in the 18th century, Littledean Jail (15 minutes) now houses an eclectic collection ranging from punk-rock memorabilia, to witchcraft-related artefacts. There are also location-appropriate displays such as village stocks, body cages and hangman’s nooses, plus personal items of notorious criminals like the Kray Twins. Tintern Abbey (half an hour), sitting in ruins on the Welsh bank of the River Wye, was founded in the 1100s and became a victim of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries policy just four centuries later. In addition to falconry displays, the site runs informative guided tours shedding light on the life of the monks.
