General

  • Coarse fishery, camping and glamping in the National Forest
  • A short drive from Donington Park
  • Less than a mile from Calke Abbey

Yes, there's fishing available at this site. Quite a bit of it, in fact: one elated angler staying at Springwood Fisheries bagged over a hundred specimens in a tiddling two days...

Not an avid angler? There's a fair bit to do anyway around this friendly Derbyshire site, as it's on the edge of the National Forest and is a cracking base for a decent bagful of local attractions: Calke Abbey, for example, is less than a mile away and the racing circuit of Donington Park within about 10 to 15 minutes' drive.

All guests have access to the site facilities of toilets and showers, a water station, chemical waste and refuse disposal. A café on site serves snacks and hot and cold drinks; Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Melbourne village are close by for other supplies.

The angling at Springwood Fisheries is of the coarse variety, on two lakes brimming with common, ghost and mirror carp, crucians, ide, chub, tench, roach, rudd, perch and barbel, and is charged per day ticket.

Finally, please note that while older children are welcome at Springwood Fisheries, the nature and layout of the site means there's limited space to play: ball games and bikes are therefore not allowed.

    Disliked:

Although the site was clean & tidy it's set up for fishermen. Showering facilities were very poor. The noise from the road was a bit of an indurance but not that much same as the noise from the planes leaving east Midlands airport. Unfortunately dont think we will be staying again especially as the cost was £ 25.00 per night out of season.

Lovely secluded site, obviously set up for anglers with a fishing lake and lots of fishing platforms. Good level hard stands with electric, water on stand and clean toilets and showers available. Somebody said it was noisy due to it's location close to East Midlands Airport, personally I had no issue with this and certainly didn't get woken up by low flying aircraft. There are lots of walks through the woods, leading to Staunton Harold resevoir, Calke Abbey and surrounding villages. Thoroughly enjoyed the site and location. Good friendly welcome from the owners who also gave some local information for us regarding places to walk.

    Disliked:

    Nothing.

Pleasant site with clean facilities, good pitch and dog friendly.11/25/2019

Sandwood had a pleasant outlook with the pitches arranged around the fishing ponds.
Our pitch was hardstanding electric adjacent to the road and a short walk to the toilets and showers which were clean and well equipped.

The site had a cafe but it may have been open at some point but we never saw it as such.

It is an adult site,so no children running around which made it a more relaxed atmosphere, and it was dog friendly as well.

The site is also close to Donnington Park Race Circuit.

We were only there for the night but would consider a revisit if in the area.

    Disliked:

There was some Air Traffic noise from East Midlands Airport which started around 6am, but it was not too bad.
