Flagg View: The pitches

General

  • Peaceful location on a farm near Buxton, with Peak District views
  • A 25-minute drive to Chatsworth House; 40 minutes to Alton Towers
  • Grass site near the High Peak Trail; pubs within walking distance

Set on a secluded working farm with glorious views over Derbyshire hillsides, Flagg View is a no-frills camping site with just a handful of pitches and plenty of space for all. For lovers of bracing fresh air and outdoor adventures, this quiet spot is close to loads of activities in the Peak District National Park.

Yep, you can keep the family (and your canine pals) busy on moorland and hill walks to ancient stone circles and hill barrows. Other activities within a half-hour’s drive include kayaking and sailing on Tittesworth Reservoir, teeing off on several golf courses, or fishing.

Pick up supplies for your barbecue at handy supermarkets in Matlock (half an hour’s drive), although there’s no pressure to cook really, as several cosy inns offering real ales and classic pub menus are within walking distance.

A couple of local farm shops produce award-winning ice cream (great for bribing the kids to behave), where you can also pick up meat cuts to grill on the barbecue (bring your own gear).

This being a straightforward stop, there’s no hot water available on site, and basic amenities don’t stretch any further than chemical waste disposal.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

As the site is on a septic tank, only eco-friendly green Aqua-Kem green sachets are allowed and can be bought onsite for £1.50 if needed.

Small quiet friendly site situated on a farm, just what we wanted, Jack the farmer is a really helpful guy he was there to greet us and popped to see us on Saturday to ensure everything was ok, he was happy to share his knowledge of the surrounding area and the 2 local pubs both within walking distance about 15mins. He also phoned us on the day prior to us leaving home and again when we completely missed the entrance (Thank you Jack) we were on pitch 3 hard standing & grass with power & water the pitches are well kept, our neighbours were really great too & very helpful with loads of good tips along with sites they have visited, we've walked so much of this area in recent years staying in cottages and Inns but this was a 1st for us with our own caravan, so very much a learning weekend for us, would definitely recommend and will return next year.

Jack was lovely - came to introduce himself and check everything was alright.

    Disliked:

Pitches are sloping but extra blocks provided by the site - just a bit awkward if you have an awning - wouldn't stop us going again.

Local attractions

Valleys, lakes and moors are just waiting to be explored on foot or bike, with the Three Shires Head circular route (20 minutes’ drive) revealing waterfalls and rock pools for paddling. Serious cyclists can access the High Peak Trail in minutes, and if you didn’t bring the bikes, hire them at Parsley Hay (five minutes).

It’s worth a potter around cute Peak District towns like Bakewell with its lovely Wye riverside walks, and Buxton (both 15 minutes), where you can catch performances at the grand opera house. There’s plenty on offer for culture vultures too; Chatsworth House is packed with art treasures and its extensive grounds make a perfect picnic spot, while you can explore Tudor-era rooms at fortified Haddon Hall (both 25 minutes).

Top of the to-do list for kids may well be the thrill rides at Alton Towers (40 minutes), but if your children are younger, you might fancy an afternoon’s pirate-themed fun on gentle log flumes at Gulliver’s Kingdom or a cable-car ride up to the Heights of Abraham (both half an hour) outlook for cavern tours and fossil exhibitions.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (6.2 miles)
  • Chatsworth (8.0 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (11.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (8.1 miles)
