  • Cosy wooden chalets in Arnac-Pompadour, Corrèze’s ‘City of the Horse’
  • A 15-minute walk to Pompadour Racecourse and Arnac-Pompadour shops
  • Simple accommodation with sports facilities, swimming pool and riding
With comfy chalets dotted through woodland, Les Gîtes de la Forêt is a rural Limousin site with one particularly important selling point: it’s a 15-minute walk to both the famous Pompadour Racecourse and the National Anglo-Arab Stud, making it a special spot for everyone into horse riding and racing. The simple wooden chalets here are pretty spacious, sleeping up to six people, and kitted out with facilities including showers in the bathrooms (with separate loos) and kitchens equipped with multi-function ovens. You can eat outside on the decking (pick up bits in handy Arnac-Pompadour food shops) or cosy up around the fireplace inside (wood not supplied). If you’re travelling with young kids, you can hire cots, baby baths and high chairs (book in advance though) and thoughtful facilities to make your life easier include all bed linen provided, plus a laundry area (extra charge) with washing machine and dryer. There’s a free wifi connection and a small fee for TV rental to keep the family entertained. Out and about on site, you can chat to fellow guests around the communal barbecue and challenge the kids to table tennis (equipment loan available). There are swings and slides in the play area, and the heated outdoor swimming pool and paddling pool are open in July and August (but not Sundays or public holidays). Playing pétanque and tennis should wear out the teens, but if they’ve still got plenty of energy, you can send them off on the mountain-biking trail or on pony-trekking adventures in the surrounding forest.

Local attractions

Magnificent Château de Pompadour is an imposing 15th-century hulk open for self-guided tours of ornamental rooms and many, many paintings of horses, with lovely gardens to drift around too. In the castle grounds, Pompadour Racecourse holds loads of horsey events during the year, from jumping competitions to dressage and steeplechasing. The equine theme continues at the National Anglo-Arab Stud (all five minutes’ drive), where pony-mad people can tour the stables. Don’t worry though if you’re just not that into horses. Mosey around the ruins of Arnac Abbey (five minutes) or head to handsome Brive-la-Gaillarde (45 minutes) for its medieval architecture and a rootle around gourmet food markets (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning). There’s an abundance of pretty Corrèze villages to explore, and Perigord (an hour and five minutes) is the gateway to cliffside villages overlooking the Dordogne river as well as rafting or canoeing adventures out on the water.
