Meonside campsite
Great views

  • Spacious and peaceful working farm site on the banks of the river Meon
  • A 15-minute walk to the South Downs Way
  • Toilets, communal area, washing-up area and firepit
Green hills, a gently sloping valley, a chalk-bed river and some friendly local cows – if you fancy waking up to views like these on your next trip, make tracks for Meonside Camping, a Hampshire site 10 minutes' drive from Petersfield. This site is particularly well set up for walkers and cyclists: it's right next to the East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty cycle route and an easy 15-minute stroll from the popular South Downs Way. More scenic surrounds are on hand in and around the South Downs National Park: head 20 minutes down the road by car for picnics at Queen Elizabeth Country Park or spectacular views at Beacon Hill Nature Reserve. Meonside Camping is a working farm, so there's plenty of animal and plant life on display here throughout the year. Guests at this back-to-basics site have access to well-kept facilities including toilets, a firepit, drinking water, communal seating and a washing-up area. The folk in charge of this place like to keep things on the quiet side, so guest numbers are kept low to ensure plenty of space and peace and quiet for all. If you fancy cooking over coals, set up a barbecue and get sizzling (barbecue meat packs can be ordered ahead and delivered on the night – use the special requests box to find out more and order). Meanwhile, those who feel like leaving the meal prep to someone else can head off to East Meon, a 15-minute stroll away, for great pub grub at one of two local boozers.

What customers say

A lovely, no-frills spot. Reviewers love the friendly hosts, peace, and scenery. Fire pits and the local village are a bonus. Basic facilities mean some want hot showers. Good value for a chilled, nature escape.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Campsite easily found, field as described with good porta loos. Lovely scenery, local to what I needed to do.

Disliked Didn’t see any owner, anyone to give any direction as to where to pitch up, so picked a space giving the people next to us plenty of room for privacy, faced our tent entrance away to maintain theirs & our privacy. Not long after someone else pitched up next to us but left plenty of room between & space for my car. We went out & returned to that person having put up another large tent taking up the space where my car went, so the entrance of my tent opened directly into their camp where they were sat. They seemed completely oblivious to what they’d done or just didn’t care. I had to squeeze my car in the other side. I rotated my tent 180 degrees so we had some privacy. This family kept me up with shouting, kids screaming & arguing, opening & closing of the car door, smoking weed until 2am. At 2am, their dog barked & woke my daughter up & noticed that they were shining their torch directly into our tent, I sound loudly I don’t know why the light is shining in our tent & it clicked off. To be honest as it was just myself (lone female) with my young daughter in a small tent, I did not feel safe around them, I did not sleep well at all, so we packed up & left after one night. I would return but I hope I would have better neighbours/ more direction in where to pitch up. Such a shame that my daughters first experience of camping was let down by rude, ignorant people smoking weed despite being in a work van, very professional!

Liked A very basic site, with just portaloo toilets and sinks, no showers etc, but we already knew this as we have stayed here before.
Very friendly owner as well.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Very quiet, spacious and lovely views.
Easy to find and signposted so you can’t miss the field

Disliked The only thing that bothered me was that people were allowed to have fire pits and I was concerned due the heatwave and kindle on the ground at the moment

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Large clean open space. No set pitches. Relaxed vibe. Good pub in East Meon village a short walk from the campsite. Good location for access to South Downs Way. Fire pits provided (though to dry to risk last weekend). Friendly. Easy booking. Inexpensive compared to others.

Disliked Nothing really. You have to be aware that this is a pop-up campsite, so toilet and washing up facilities are not basic but adequate and there are no showers (as advertised). So long as you arrive with the right expectations, you will have a lovely stay.

Local attractions

The farmers here are mindful about their impact on the local area and do all that they can to keep the valley as natural as possible. Guests who want to learn more about caring for the land should make tracks to the local sustainability centre (30 minutes' walk) and try their hand at bushcraft or permaculture. Still want more? Further agricultural techniques are on show at Butser Ancient Farm (10 minutes' drive) and Weald & Downland Living Museum (35 minutes). All the walking, cycling and foraging you're bound to get up to hereabouts being thirsty work, you may find yourself hankering for a restorative glass of vino. Head to Hambledon Vineyard (10 minutes) if you're curious about trying a glass of top-notch sparkling English wine. Beer-drinking guests, meanwhile, may well want to check out the cask-conditioned real ales made at Langham Brewery (30 minutes). For a really wild day out, head to Marwell Zoo (30 minutes), or try Birdworld (30 minutes) for some avian adventure. Eagle-eyed visitors researching the area may also have spotted that this site is within easy reach of West Sussex Falconry (25 minutes).
