General

  • Spacious and peaceful working farm site on the banks of the river Meon
  • A 15-minute walk to the South Downs Way
  • Toilets, communal area, washing-up area and firepit

Rolling hills, a gently sloping valley, a chalk-bed river and some friendly local cows – if you fancy waking up to views like these on your next trip, make tracks for Meonside Camping, a Hampshire site 10 minutes' drive from Petersfield.

This site is particularly well set up for walkers and cyclists: it's right next to the East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty cycle route and an easy 15-minute stroll from the popular South Downs Way. More scenic surrounds are on hand in and around the South Downs National Park: head 20 minutes down the road by car for picnics at Queen Elizabeth Country Park or spectacular views at Beacon Hill Nature Reserve.

Meonside Camping is a working farm, so there's plenty of animal and plant life on display here throughout the year. Guests at this back-to-basics site have access to well-kept facilities including toilets, a firepit, drinking water, communal seating and a washing-up area. The folk in charge of this place like to keep things on the quiet side, so guest numbers are kept low to ensure plenty of space and peace and quiet for all.

If you fancy cooking over coals, set up a barbecue and get sizzling; those who feel like leaving the meal prep to someone else can head off to East Meon, a 15-minute stroll away, for great pub grub at one of two local boozers.

Basic site best for younger groups and backpackers09/14/2020

Basic campsite in lovely location, with views out across the South Downs. Four Portaloos and one sink with clean water provided. Van serving coffee and a few food options in the mornings, was a nice touch. One field only, quite small - definitely smaller than we expected from photos.

    Disliked:

    No showers.
Nowhere to leave rubbish or recycling onsite, nor any suggestions provided about where to drop rubbish nearby or on way home.
Site was quite over-booked on our visit. This was apparently as it was the last weekend of the season, and there was lots of demand, but it did feel a bit overcrowded for our liking.
Site was also very noisy. There were several large groups of young people, including what looked like one stag party. They were playing loud music, singing and shouting until 1-2am. Nobody from the site came to do anything about this, despite at least one complaint sent via text message to the owner. The campsite rules clearly stated quiet hours of 11pm-7am but these were not at all respected during our visit.

From the manager...

We apologise for not being able to stop a small minority of selfish campers from upsetting your stay. It is a great frustration as we make it very clear we are a quiet, family site but unfortunately these rules were broken.

I'm afraid due to Coronavirus, we are not disposing of our campers rubbish and we feel it fair to ask guests, if they brought it, they can take it home.

The site website clearly states there are no showers.

When you arrive you are free to choose your own plot.
Fires are allowed here which is one of the main things we were looking for & the owner drives round regularly and sells firewood.
The area is beautiful and ideal if you love long walks too. There are toilets on site which were cleaned daily but on hotter days may still smell.

    Disliked:

As with everywhere you end up with a few extremely loud campers, unfortunately we were pitched up in between them. Also the ground was quite uneven and covered in molehills.

We pulled on a field after being sent down the worst lanes ever with a caravan. Nearly missed the sign, had no acknowledgement of being there if I hadn't paid in advance wouldn't have done so. Stayed long enough to be able to change ferry booking and went. Not heard of them to see why we didn't turn up

From the manager...

We are sorry you struggled to find the site. All the lanes surrounding the campsite are wide enough for caravans as they surround a working farm. The campsite is on Google Maps and the sign is on the road so not to confuse anyone.

Great views, clean portaloos. Will was lovely checking everyone was ok three times a day also selling firewood for the pits provided. Great walking if you have a dog. The village within walking distance has a beautiful church built in 1080. Would definitely recommend, even with limited facilities.

    Disliked:

Would be great to have side access to avoid the busy road. A roof for the washing up area would also be a bonus.

Local attractions

The farmers here are mindful about their impact on the local area and do all that they can to keep the valley as natural as possible. Guests who want to learn more about caring for the land should make tracks to the local sustainability centre (30 minutes' walk) and try their hand at bushcraft or permaculture. Still want more? Further agricultural techniques are on show at Butser Ancient Farm (10 minutes' drive) and Weald & Downland Living Museum (35 minutes).

All the walking, cycling and foraging you're bound to get up to hereabouts being thirsty work, you may find yourself hankering for a restorative glass of vino. Head to Hambledon Vineyard (10 minutes) if you're curious about trying a glass of top-notch sparkling English wine. Beer-drinking guests, meanwhile, may well want to check out the cask-conditioned real ales made at Langham Brewery (30 minutes).

For a really wild day out, head to Marwell Zoo (30 minutes), or try Birdworld (30 minutes) for some avian adventure. Eagle-eyed visitors researching the area may also have spotted that this site is within easy reach of West Sussex Falconry (25 minutes).
