This is the Lakes without the crowds. Wake up to spectacular views across the Lowther Valley and the Lakeland fells at Scarside Farm, a small family-run upland farm just inside the Lake District National Park. New for 2026, this pop-up site has a limited number of spacious grass pitches for anyone looking to switch off in one of the Lake District’s most peaceful – and stunning – corners. It’s well placed for exploring the quiet eastern side of the national park, and yet is only 15 minutes’ drive from Junction 39 of the M6. Set at almost 1,000 feet above sea level, the campsite enjoys spectacular sunsets, dark skies and direct access to quiet footpaths and bridleways leading towards Haweswater and Knipe Scar. Expect generous pitch sizes, plenty of space between neighbours, fresh fell air and uninterrupted views. Bring a chair, light a campfire (you can hire firepits on site) and soak up the sort of peace that’s often hard to find. The villages of Bampton, Askham and Shap are all within 15 minutes’ drive for supplies, cafés and pubs. Please note: this is a simple, low-impact pop-up site with drinking water provided and pristine toilets in a converted trailer but no shower facilities.

Local attractions

You can join local bridleways and fell paths leading towards Knipe Scar (half an hour’s walk), Bampton Common (40 minutes) and the Haweswater Valley (an hour) from the pitches. Haweswater Reservoir (15 minutes’ drive) is one of the Lake District’s most scenic and least-crowded lakes, with excellent walking, wildlife watching and photography opportunities. Cyclists can try the moderate route between Askham and Haweswater, perhaps stopping off to (hopefully) see the badgers and raptors that call RSPB at Wild Haweswater (20 minutes by bike) home. Otherwise, there are ample quiet country lanes throughout the Lowther Valley. For family days out, Lowther Castle and Gardens (20 minutes’ drive) has woodland walks, play areas and events throughout the summer. Nature-loving kids might get lucky and spot red squirrels at Haweswater Nature Reserve (10 minutes); it’s one of the UK’s most important upland conservation landscapes with wildflower-rich meadows, and also a haven for birds of prey. Anyone looking for water-bound adventures can head for Ullswater (25 minutes) for lake cruises, sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding.
