This is the Lakes without the crowds. Wake up to spectacular views across the Lowther Valley and the Lakeland fells at Scarside Farm, a small family-run upland farm just inside the Lake District National Park. New for 2026, this pop-up site has a limited number of spacious grass pitches for anyone looking to switch off in one of the Lake District’s most peaceful – and stunning – corners. It’s well placed for exploring the quiet eastern side of the national park, and yet is only 15 minutes’ drive from Junction 39 of the M6. Set at almost 1,000 feet above sea level, the campsite enjoys spectacular sunsets, dark skies and direct access to quiet footpaths and bridleways leading towards Haweswater and Knipe Scar. Expect generous pitch sizes, plenty of space between neighbours, fresh fell air and uninterrupted views. Bring a chair, light a campfire (you can hire firepits on site) and soak up the sort of peace that’s often hard to find in 21st-century life. The villages of Bampton, Askham and Shap are all within 15 minutes’ drive for supplies, cafés and pubs. Please note: this is a simple, low-impact pop-up site with drinking water provided and pristine toilets in a converted trailer but no shower facilities.

What customers say

Tranquil, natural spot with vast pitches & great fell views. Walkers love the peace, friendly hosts & clean loos. No showers & iffy mobile signal mentioned. Villages nearby for supplies, pub within walking distance. Perfect for a quiet nature escape.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had such a lovely time at this campsite. The toilet facilities was lovely and clean- with a station to wash all your cutlery and a tap to use for water for the dog and to drink. Was lovely to meet the owner, we had no signal as we was unfortunately on o2 but the owner booked us a table at a lovely pub so we had a gorgeous walk down for some food & when we came back the campsite was lovely and quiet with gorgeous views!

From the manager: Hi Petula

Thanks for the great review. It was really nice to meet you both and I’m glad we managed to get you booked into the pub despite the lack of O2 signal! The walk down for some food and back up to a quiet campsite sounds like a pretty good way to spend an evening. Thanks for staying with us and hopefully we’ll see you at Scarside again.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly welcome
The space between the pitches, your in a lovely field with mowed pitches.
Great sense of space
Fabulous views, peaceful, felt like wild camping
Toilet block was clean
All pitches are grass and same regardless of tent or van.
Can have awning with a van, as discussed with owner.
No noise after 9.30pm.
Beautiful villages nearby
Swimming pool at Askham 15mins away with showers

Disliked I had little phone signal on 3G, but that wasn't a problem.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Such a great site. They could easily double the number of pitches but unlike so many other sites these days they've sacrificed the extra bookings for lots of space between pitches :)

Quiet. Great location and views.

Couldn't recommend enough.

From the manager: Hi Palmer,

Thank you so much for your fantastic review.

We're especially pleased you appreciated the space between the pitches. We certainly could fit more pitches onto the site, but we've deliberately chosen to keep numbers low so everyone can enjoy the peace, the views and the feeling of having a little more room to themselves.

Your recommendation means a great deal to us as a small family-run campsite. We hope to welcome you back to Scarside again before too long.

Liked Peaceful, natural, good views of the fells. Mown pitches and pathways spaciously set within long grass field.
Decent clean facilities.

Disliked Lack of a shower (as advertised)

From the manager: Hi,

Thank you for your kind review and for recommending us to others.

We're really pleased you enjoyed the peaceful setting, the spacious meadow pitches and the views of the fells. It's exactly the kind of simple, nature-focused camping experience we're aiming to create.

Thank you too for mentioning the lack of showers. As you say, this is advertised before booking, and while we know it won't suit everyone, we've chosen to keep the site simple and low impact while providing clean, toilet and washing facilities.

We hope to welcome you back to Scarside in the future.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The facilities at the campsite (toilets, refill taps and recycling) were good, and the pitches were large, well defined and well maintained. The owners were lovely, introduced us to the campsite and were willing to answer any questions

Disliked The only concern was the incomplete cell service across the campsite. Good for those trying to get away from technology, not so much for us Coast to Coast walkers who needed to plan our next steps.

From the manager: Hi,

Thank you for your review. We're really pleased you enjoyed the spacious pitches, the facilities and your welcome to Scarside.

Thank you too for mentioning the mobile signal. Your stay coincided with Kendal Calling, when the local mobile network can be much busier than usual, which may have affected reception across the area. Outside of that weekend, most guests are able to find a signal somewhere on site, although coverage does vary between networks.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your Coast to Coast walk, and we'd love to welcome you back if you're ever in this part of Cumbria again.

Tom & Lauren

Local attractions

You can join local bridleways and fell paths leading towards Knipe Scar (half an hour’s walk), Bampton Common (40 minutes) and the Haweswater Valley (an hour) from the pitches. Haweswater Reservoir (15 minutes’ drive) is one of the Lake District’s most scenic and least-crowded lakes, with excellent walking, wildlife watching and photography opportunities. Cyclists can try the moderate route between Askham and Haweswater, perhaps stopping off to (hopefully) see the badgers and raptors that call RSPB at Wild Haweswater (20 minutes by bike) home. Otherwise, there are ample quiet country lanes throughout the Lowther Valley. For family days out, Lowther Castle and Gardens (20 minutes’ drive) has woodland walks, play areas and events throughout the summer. Nature-loving kids might get lucky and spot red squirrels at Haweswater Nature Reserve (10 minutes); it’s one of the UK’s most important upland conservation landscapes with wildflower-rich meadows, and also a haven for birds of prey. Anyone looking for water-bound adventures can head for Ullswater (25 minutes) for lake cruises, sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding.
