Spacious pitches

  • Spacious pitches near Pickering in the North York Moors National Park
  • Whitby, Dalby Forest and Castle Howard within 35 minutes' drive
  • Small café and luxury bathrooms on site; dogs and kids welcome
On the southern edge of North York Moors National Park – and a geographically sensible choice for those intent on a hiking holiday – Bank Top Camping is a family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Pickering. Woodland walks can be accessed directly from the site, but it’s not just the ramblers who find the location convenient: watersports enthusiasts can reach the North Sea coast in less than one hour, with places like Whitby (40 minutes’ drive) and Scarborough (50 minutes) among the top local choices. Spacious pitches sit on the edge of a large field fringed by tall, leafy trees, and they come with electric hook-ups and views over the Vale of Pickering, plus oodles of room for children to run around and play games. The kids might also enjoy making friends with the resident animals; speaking of which, while dogs are welcome guests at Bank Top Camping, they should be kept on a lead while on site. A small café sells hot drinks, locally made ice cream and a selection of home-baked goods (mmm… muffins), as well as honey produced on site by hard-working bees that you can watch at the fascinating Observation Hive. If you’re into making your own food, there’s a communal fridge freezer to store any essentials, and a sheltered washing-up area with plenty of hot water. Other facilities include a toilet block with luxury touches such as underfloor heating (blissful, on a parky Yorkshire morning), hot-water showers and hairdryers. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Liked Superb site. The quietest campsite we have ever stayed on :-)
Lots of space for tent and car and room in the middle to play games.
Lovely clean facilities with undercover area for washing up
Facilities room with access to a freezer and fridge - fantastic for ice pack freezing which seems to be becoming more rare (also had a washing machine and tumble drier)
Rural location
The owner was around (and very friendly) in case of any problems

Disliked Nothing!

Power optional grass site (large)

Liked This was our first camping trip as a family and from the moment we arrived, we loved everything about it. The toilets and showers were spotless and rarely busy. The addition of the family shower room was perfect with our five year old. The site was perfectly maintained and felt safe and secure, with pitches set far enough apart for the space to feel like your own, along with a wooded area to the back of the site to exercise our dog.
We also loved being able to purchase hot drinks, milkshakes and ice cream on site, along with the best venison burgers I’ve ever had. All campers respected each other’s privacy and were lovely neighbours for the week. The owners were very friendly and should be extremely proud of the fabulous site they have created. We already can’t wait to visit again, hopefully bringing along more of the family.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked A beatifully spaced out campsite with a relax quite atmosphere. Backs into a small wood which is perfect for kids and dogs to explore. You’re close to delightful Pickering, the heritage train line to Whitby… what a commute! Also close to well preserved Roman fort, so if they travelled thousands of miles 2,000 years ago to stay there, it must have something special! A very pleasant place to stay.

Liked De locatie was heel fijn.

Local attractions

Reward the kids for not complaining (much) during your hikes through the moors by taking them to Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes’ drive), with thrill rides and family-friendly attractions, plus a zoo with big cats, primates and farmyard animals. Or head to Dalby Forest (25 minutes), where a Go Ape park has treetop adventure courses for all ages. A spectacular country mansion in the equally spectacular setting of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, Castle Howard (35 minutes) might look familiar from TV dramas such as ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Victoria’. Elegant interiors include the Chapel, with its opulent pre-Raphaelite decoration by the likes of William Morris. Stroll around the harbour at Whitby (40 minutes), grabbing fish and chips or embarking on a coastal cruise to see seals and (if you’re lucky) dolphins. Back on dry land, climb the 199 Steps leading to the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’.
