On the southern edge of North York Moors National Park – and a geographically sensible choice for those intent on a hiking holiday – Bank Top Camping is a family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Pickering. Woodland walks can be accessed directly from the site, but it’s not just the ramblers who find the location convenient: watersports enthusiasts can reach the North Sea coast in less than one hour, with places like Whitby (40 minutes’ drive) and Scarborough (50 minutes) among the top local choices. Spacious pitches sit on the edge of a large field fringed by tall, leafy trees, and they come with electric hook-ups and views over the Vale of Pickering, plus oodles of room for children to run around and play games. The kids might also enjoy making friends with the resident animals; speaking of which, while dogs are welcome guests at Bank Top Camping, they should be kept on a lead while on site. A small café sells hot drinks, locally made ice cream and a selection of home-baked goods (mmm… muffins), as well as honey produced on site by hard-working bees that you can watch at the fascinating Observation Hive. If you’re into making your own food, there’s a communal fridge freezer to store any essentials, and a sheltered washing-up area with plenty of hot water. Other facilities include a toilet block with luxury touches such as underfloor heating (blissful, on a parky Yorkshire morning), hot-water showers and hairdryers. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Rustige, schone camping met ruime plaatsen en uitstekende, moderne faciliteiten. Gasten prijzen de vriendelijke hosts, de rust en de mooie boswandelingen. Kleine winkel met lokale producten en drankjes is een pluspunt. Enkele minpunten: douchetemperatuur en beperkte entertainment. Zeer aanbevolen voor een ontspannen verblijf.

Ik was blij met easy camping for dog owners, good walks from site. very clean facilities, lots of hot water.

Ik was niet blij met we were a bit cramped for space in our corner of the field. good job the couple next to us had a small tent.

Ik was blij met Clean facilities. Had everything I needed:
Clean toilets, hot showers.. actually too hot until it’s been running a while, but then cold. Grey and black waste, laundry room with communal fridge and freezer. Nice wash up area. Recycling. Short woodland walk straight off the site. Practical and fulfilled my basic needs.

Ik was niet blij met Personally I found the situation of my pitch to be on the small side. I was told it was a standard pitch but I guess I am used to camping on sites that are on the “wilder side” and offer more space in between pitches so I found it a little regimented. I’m glad it didn’t rain because my pitch also had a lot of bare earth rather than grass.
The shower temperature was a bit of an issue. But I got clean so it satisfied the necessary requirements.
I added a night onto my original booking but was later charged £29. I was charged £25 per night for the first two nights.

Van de manager: I am sorry to read that, despite booking an extra night, you did not enjoy some aspects of my site. The layout is as advertised. You are mistaken about your PitchUp fees - you paid £58 (2 x £29) for your first 2 nights camping - the price of a 2 person pitch with electric.

Family friendly, quiet, calm and clean- what more could you ask for!

Ik was blij met This was our second visit and equally as lovely as our first! I love that the pitches are well spaced, it’s small but organised. The shower blocks are basic but always clean and tidy and the location is perfect for accessing lots of places! It’s actually only 20mins from home but we use this sight as a test run every year and have no intention of stopping! It’s really reasonably priced too! The icecream is the very best Yorkshire has to offer too!

Ik was niet blij met A little shop would be so helpful if like us you forgot your tea bags but there’s nothing we don’t like about this site!

Ik was blij met Family run camp site with excellent hosts who were very welcoming and helpful at all points through out our three day stay with them. This site is a little gem, and far removed from being a regimental commercial site. It really has that off grid feel about it knowing you have them lovely clean and modern facilities at your disposal. We found our stay very peaceful and relaxing. The only dislike I found was having to leave to go home. Thanks to all at Bank Top Camping, hope to see you again soon......

What3words location: snows.cackling.enabling. Look out for the green sign at the turning into the campsite. From Pickering, take the road up through Newton-on-Rawcliffe. At the postcode, continue up the hill for half a mile and then turn left towards Cropton. The site is the first set of buildings on the right-hand side. From Cropton, the site is three miles away (in the direction of Stape). It is on the left-hand side, one kilometre short of the postcode.

Reward the kids for not complaining (much) during your hikes through the moors by taking them to Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes’ drive), with thrill rides and family-friendly attractions, plus a zoo with big cats, primates and farmyard animals. Or head to Dalby Forest (25 minutes), where a Go Ape park has treetop adventure courses for all ages. A spectacular country mansion in the equally spectacular setting of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, Castle Howard (35 minutes) might look familiar from TV dramas such as ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Victoria’. Elegant interiors include the Chapel, with its opulent pre-Raphaelite decoration by the likes of William Morris. Stroll around the harbour at Whitby (40 minutes), grabbing fish and chips or embarking on a coastal cruise to see seals and (if you’re lucky) dolphins. Back on dry land, climb the 199 Steps leading to the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’.
