  • Basic family-friendly campsite in the Derbyshire Dales
  • Crich Tramway and Matlock Bath within 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly site with links to Midshires Way and Cromford Canal walks
Peaceful strolls, Peak District adventures and fab rural scenery are some of what makes Hankin Farm Campsite a peachy holiday base. And peachy it is indeed… this basic, family-friendly site in the Derbyshire Dales has splendid views over Crich Stand and the added bonus of being 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Peak District National Park for those of you who are up for lots of outdoor exploration. This farm is between the villages of Alderwasley and Whatstandwell and 10 minutes' drive from Belper's numerous shops and other amenities, so coffee shops, pubs, takeaways and supermarkets are all well within reach. The nearest railway station is a mile away in Whatstandwell, making it possible to get to Hankin Farm Campsite without a car. Peaceful walks are part of the local area’s charm, including connections to the Midshires Way, the Cromford Canal and Shining Cliff Woods. That isn’t all though, as all sorts of kid-pleasing activities are very close at hand too, including Crich's well-known tramway museum, Matlock Bath's various amusements and theme parks like Gulliver's Kingdom. The roomy and dog-friendly pitches have access to separate male and female showers and toilets, plus a washing-up area. And as long as you use common sense and follow instructions from the site’s staff, barbecues and campfires are permitted on the pitches.

What customers say

A no-frills farm site with amazing views and a chill vibe. Guests rave about the helpful hosts, spotless loos/showers/dishwashing, and great value. While the sloped field is noted, it's manageable with rustic charm. Perfect for walks and exploring. Fire pits available.

Unpowered grass site

Liked I was looking for back to basics and good value. This provided all the facilities I required, well maintained and clean. Decent showers. Nice touches like providing washing up stuff (that I'd forgot)

Disliked No dislikes but it might be an idea to have a hardcore path to top of field. You get mighty wet shoes walking to the loo.

Liked Good size pitches, facilities are good enough for camping, toilets, showers, drinking water. Owners are lovely too, Tina and her family were very kind, my wife lost her engagement ring at camp and they helped us find it.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Beautiful, clean ground conditions in a stunning location. Extremely good value for money. I massively am impressed and grateful for the bargain prices here as it gives families and people access to a lifestyle that normally is very expensive. A brilliant little peaceful slice of heaven in the beautiful surroundings of Derbyshire.

Disliked Nothing. There isn't anything that could have been better.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Very spacious pitches, facilities were great just all you need. Hot water for washing up pots, large bag of firewood for £8. People around us were great, everybody really friendly. You can see the cows outside the toilets which was nice. Toilets had spiders and cobwebs but what do you expect it’s outside🤷🏻‍♀️ personally didn't care. There were showers but didn’t use them, had a look and they seemed absolutely fine would use if we needed to.

The site runners were great, very friendly, the lady and the man were so kind and welcoming. The lady I saw cleaning the toilets in the morning and the man was super lovely. Very welcoming atmosphere, beautiful views. Would definitely camp here again.

During the day we walked 45 mins to the pub but there is a cafe about 10 mins walk away. The pub was next to the tram museum, great pub and nice walk. Very uphill though, great coming back!🤣 with beautiful sunny weather we didn’t care but definitely take water with you if walking far.

No noise at night at all. Good signal, could watch a film on data. We camped next to the stream opposite horses field, beautiful to hear the stream at night. Very relaxing.

We stayed in a tent box, really enjoyed it.

Disliked The grass was a little long but we didn’t care.

Liked A warm welcome and a very peaceful site. And nice to be able to have a campfire (as long as it’s raised).
I enjoyed being able to hear the odd motorbike driving down the valley too however I know that’s not everyone’s taste

Liked Spacious, quiet, facilities all work with washing up area. Showers are free but not the most powerful you'll get. Close to a local village for all your shopping food needs

Disliked Grass was a little long but nothing you can't deal with.

Local attractions

Plot out the way to the Peak District… will it be fish and chips by the river in Matlock Bath (10 minutes' drive) or taking the cable car to the Heights of Abraham’s underground caverns (10 minutes) that gets your attention first? Gulliver's Kingdom (10 minutes) is just outside the town too for those of you with kids tagging along. Places that bring a little of history to your holiday are easy to find around here. There are period buildings and vintage trams ready for boarding at Crich Tramway (10 minutes), tours and walks around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cromford Mills (10 minutes) and the Nine Ladies (25 minutes) stone circle to see. Belper (10 minutes) is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site – so you'll be well-set to learn more about the Peak District's industrial heritage – and for other interesting little places, Wirksworth (10 minutes) has a lively marketplace, heritage centre and a museum with the bones of old villagers. For those of you with an artistic streak, Denby Pottery Village (15 minutes) runs pottery painting in its craft studio, or you could look inside the farm shop and factory shop to see what goodies are available to take home.
