  • Quiet site with shop and snack bar by the River Tarn
  • Within 20 minutes of walks and boat rides under the Millau Viaduct
  • Half an hour by car from Roquefort and the Tarn Gorges
Got a thing for gorges? Get over to Camping Les Erables, where canyons, chasms, valleys and viaducts are all around. The River Tarn runs right by this peaceful site, which is a couple of minutes’ drive from the town of Millau and 20 minutes from the record-busting viaduct of the same name. It's part of the Grands Causses Natural Regional Park, so whether you get your kicks from cable-stayed bridges or caves, hiking, whitewater rafting or rambling around Templar forts, you’ll have a full itinerary for your stay. That’s if you want one; if not, you could easily pass your days on and around this pretty spot in France's Midi-Pyrénées region, contemplating the river or perhaps strolling by it, fishing beside it or paddling upon it, ambling over to the on-site snack bar for drinks and sustenance… and dropping into the shop for newspapers, bread and regional products. Around the region, you need to make it no further than Millau for tours of the 12th-century town square and the glove museum, and archaeological wanderings of the former Gallo-Roman settlement of Graufesenque. You can’t very well come and go without a gander at the viaduct though, and one of the finest views of the world's tallest bridge is obtained by cruising under it, on a boat from Creissels 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Huge and high up though it is, the viaduct can barely compete with the fine landscape in these parts: 25 minutes’ drive away, the Chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux is a dolomite rock field of arches, pinnacles, spires and towers above the gorges of the Dourbies, best explored by walking trails and zipwires. If you’re up for shooting through the Tarn gorges at speed, Le Rozier (half an hour away) is the departure point for canoeing and rafting trips, and those more into depths than heights can descend into the geological mysteries of Dargilan and Aven Armand caves (40 and 55 minutes). For a cave experience of a more culinary kind, make the half-hour trip to Roquefort-sur-Soulzon where tours of the cheese-filled labyrinths end in tastings, purchases… and perhaps a picnic lunch. History buffs trek over to L’Hospitalet-du-Larzac (half an hour) to learn about the Knights Templar in the museum, and then make the pilgrimage to medieval La Couvertoirade, a fortified village where the persecuted sect took refuge amid the grand gorges (40 minutes). Going from the grand to the minuscule… everything that creeps, crawls, scuttles and slithers can be seen at Micropolis, City of Insects and at the Larzac Reptilarium; both are 25 minutes away.
