  • Quiet and green site between the Cher river and the Canal de Berry
  • Five minutes' drive from Saint-Amand-Montrond; market within 1km
  • Edged by a lake with watersports and a balneotherapy centre
Slap bang in the centre of France – and in the Centre region’s Cher department – is the green and quiet site of Camping Canal de Berry, set between the Cher river and Canal de Berry. This is an excellently equipped site for peaceful and laidback stays: the grounds are edged by a lake for watersports; there’s a balneotherapy centre for days where de-stressing is the focus; and sporty options for all ages include tennis, badminton, ping pong and a playground for the kids. Camping Canal de Berry is a kilometre away from its nearest town, Saint-Amand-Montrond, about 40 minutes’ drive south of the half-timbered houses and Gothic-inspired cathedral of Bourges, known for its swish stained-glass windows. Shops and services are in Saint-Amand-Montrond town centre and a market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings is less than a kilometre from the site. A bakery and takeaway open up in July and August for those days when cooking’s not on the agenda but treats most definitely are… A five-minute drive from the park is the Gallo-Roman Drevant, an ancient theatre you can have a wander round if you’re looking to get out and about without veering too far. If learning about regional history's where your interests lie, the Saint-Vic Museum is the same distance away, with artefacts and art spanning from aeons ago to more modern times.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Friendly and efficient reception, clean and spacious pitch, decent price, showers had hot water, shop for emergency purchases. Easy to access by camper, car or bike.

Disliked: Someone nearby was doing burnouts in a rubbish car, despite the absence of a Tescos car park. Only briefly, presumably returning to more traditional courting activities after the lack of initial success.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Inexpensive green private and cool and close to the town

Disliked: Some noisy people a few miles away we're playing music until late but that's not the campsite's fault.

Local attractions

Over in Lac de Virlay, a 10-minute drive from Camping Canal de Berry, you can rent a pedalo or canoe for a leisurely skim across the surface of the water. More into staying on dry land? There’s also fishing, hiking and badminton available on the banks of this scenic area – and you can go riding at a stable around five kilometres away. For those more into culture than adventure, the City of Gold, a museum dedicated to the precious metal stuff, and 12th-century Noirlac Abbey, are a 10-minute drive away. The castles of the Route Jacques Coeur – a tourist-centric roadway known as France’s oldest – also aren’t far away: Meillant and Ainay-le-Vieil are reachable in 15 minutes, while Culan takes 25 minutes. For walks around 10,600 hectares of a nationally managed area of wood known for its oaks, the Forest of Tronçais is less than a half-hour drive away; if you’re there in autumn, you might just hear a few stags making noises through the trees… Roe deer, boars, tawny owls and common buzzards have been known to appear during strolls at other times of the year.
