  • Site with its own private airstrip with restored aircraft
  • Within easy reach of Branscombe beach, Seaton and Beer
  • Safe and enclosed play area; games room; plenty of space for play
Branscombe Airfield and Camping is four miles from Sidmouth, Seaton and Beer, on the edge of Branscombe village and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Lyme Bay. The site has its own private airstrip, home to a range of vintage and classic aircraft, including a Stearman PT-17 and a Zlín 526. The resident pilots and restoration team are happy to show guests the current lineup when they are available; you may also see occasional flight activity (when pilot availability and weather/ground conditions permit). Branscombe has plenty of wide open space with views of Devon countryside and distant sea views. There are refurbished toilets and free showers, as well as a modern utilities block, a washing-up area and a launderette with a washing machine and tumble dryer. There's also a safe and enclosed play area with plenty of space to play football and other outdoor activities, and a small indoor games room is also available. Foodies can head out to two pubs within a mile and a half – one within a short 20-minute stroll.

What customers say

A lovely spot, with room to swing a cat and views to take your breath away. Chris and Tracey are dead on, always there to lend a hand. Showers and loos are grand and clean. The planes are a bit of crack, as is the games room and dog run. A proper peaceful place, though the lanes can be a tad tight and some pitches are a bit lopsided.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Really nice campsite at a very reasonable price. Games room with Pool , table tennis & table football. How many campsites will you get to watch a plane take off and land 🤷🏻‍♂️.
Friendly owners & decent basic toilets/showers. Would stay again.

Disliked You’ll need pegs for hard ground but they sell them cheaply in the shop.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Clean campsite, plenty of space, good dog exercise field and small children’s play park. We also enjoyed seeing the planes landing and taking of at the small airfield next to the campsite.

Disliked Not enough toilets and showers for busy times, no privacy to brush your teeth in the single shower block with two toilets.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, the ladies block where you brushed your teeth you could have shut the door or used the sinks in the shower block

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Super clean and well kept, especially the toilets and showers. Relatively quiet, everyone is friendly, and there are lots of facilities including washer and dryer, a game room, and picnic tables. They host little events like pizza night on Friday, and on the Saturday we had a lovely local lady with a pop-up pub that was fantastic. Super friendly and helpful owners, we would definitely visit again when in the area.

Disliked Very narrow roads, so a bit tricky to get there.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review, we are so pleased you found the facilities super clean, it means a lot to us as we work hard to maintain a good clean standard.
We look forward to seeing you both again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Good location. Check-in was easy. Available facilities were close to the camping fields etc.

Disliked Basically no hot water from the taps across the 48 hours or so we were there. Showers were hot but low pressure, but no hot water from the bathroom or utility room taps.

The site was busy, so I have some sympathy, but the bathrooms needed more regular cleaning. The mobile shower block was disgusting frankly by the Sunday morning.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, as always if you had a issue whilst you were here why did you not say!
Saying there was no hot water in all the taps was simply not true in the bathrooms as they are electric not on a boiler, so this was not possible. The bathrooms are cleaned very regularly, but we cannot help the weather with dry broken off grass in the dewy mornings being walked into the units, in fact we were very aware of this, and we went round the facilities every hour Sunday morning sweeping up grass. To say the shower block was disgusting is frankly very upsetting to us and not true, unless you are referring to grassy wet floors, we work extremely hard and with pride to keep them clean for all and again on Sunday morning the floors were mopped regularly, perhaps you could off picked up the mop provided before you used, we really cannot help how others before you used them

Route directions

There are a number of Branscombe signs on the A3052. Please only take the sign for Branscombe Bulstone. Look out for the small Branscombe Campsite & Airfield sign by the turning (the what3words is flicked.branched.blurts). After turning off the A3052, keep on the road until you see big, solid wooden gates with a sign for the site. Turn left just before the gates and then take the next right. You will then be at the site (What3words: branced.encoder.yield). Please note, entering the post code into your Satnav may take you to the wrong destination.

Local attractions

Stay at Branscombe at the beginning of August to frolic at the world-famous Sidmouth Folk Week, or mosey along to this part of Devon at any time of year to ramble and rockpool on Branscombe Mouth beach, be tempted by tasty treats in the thatched roof restaurant or take a boat out to land some mackerel and pollock for supper. Branscombe village has the Old Forge, the Old Bakery and the Norman St. Winifred Church to see, while the regency town of Sidmouth five miles to the west has a sauna, cinema, indoor pool, restaurants and gift shops as well as beaches for splashing and sunbathing. The fishing village of Beer is nearby: this sheltered beach is the spot for catching the sun’s rays, and if you don’t want to angle yourself from a boat to cast off, you can buy some fresh fish on the beach before getting on your mining helmet to explore the Beer Quarry Caves or climbing the hill (sans helmet) to the model railway exhibition and gardens at Pecorama. Cavers and trainspotters can also try the Kents Cavern Underground Caves and the South Devon Railway, both at Torquay. Devon day trips include browsing for lace in the market town of Honiton, taking a tram from Seaton along the River Axe for birdwatching at the estuary, fossil-hunting at Lyme Regis, history hunting at Exeter Cathedral and wandering the National Trust walks over Exmoor and Dartmoor. For the small fliers, Crealy Adventure Park, Paignton Zoo and Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium should have them soaring.
