  • On a working farm between the Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales
  • Close to the Pennine Way; 20 minutes' drive to Skipton
  • Three pubs within walking distance; easy access from the M65
Planning a walk or few as part of your break? Maybe in the Yorkshire Dales or the Forest of Bowland… or on the Pennine Way… and not forgetting other top spots like Pendle Hill and Gisburn Forest… If you reckon that sounds like a pretty enticing collection of places to explore, the place to stay is Shay Gate Farm, just outside Laneshawbridge on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. This well-placed spot is about half an hour’s drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland, five minutes from the Pennine Way and within easy reach of several other excellent walking/biking areas. Getting in, out and all around should be pretty easy too – Colne is about two and a half miles away, and the M65 about four miles. The setup on site is a family-friendly one, with lots of space for the kids to run about and burn off energy. Facilities include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a communal fridge, and you’re allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals if you like (it’s a 20-minute drive to Skipton’s market to stock up on local produce for the grill). There are, however, three country pubs within walking distance if you’d rather someone else cooked you a meal.

Liked: The sunset and sunrise. The views.

Disliked: It’s a couple of sloping, rough fields on a working farm which becomes a bog when it rains. My small campervan got stuck and had to be towed out…by the dad with his tractor….was told to go into the small car park right at the entrance , 200 yards from the loos. Ten minutes later a large motor home was put on the same plot!! And was stuck and had to be towed out…..all day and evening I listened to traffic from the road, and vehicles crashing over the cattle grid next to my van…. Dog’s expensive….must be on a short lead. Toilets Well there are four unisex outdoor cubicles and a urinal….for the 150 units I counted on the site. Sunday morning, three loos were covered in crap, literally, and unusable. I’d paid £50 for two nights….asked for a refund…since I can park free in a lay-by/car park!! .was given £25 back. Stayed the one night…an absolute joke and definitely not worth it. These people are not running a campsite….they’re making a lot of money from some gash land which floods. In over 60years of camping, this is definitely the worst value place I’ve ever been.

From the manager: Hi Ellen, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent visit to our campsite. We sincerely apologise for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay. We understand that your campervan getting stuck due to the 3 weeks of persistent rain we had and having to be towed out was an unpleasant experience. however if you had listened to our instruction on where to go and how to drive on to the pitch this issue would not have occurred. Regarding the placement of your campervan , we placed you on hard standing which was only 5 meters from where you had decided to pitch yourself originally. so i don't think it is fair to complain about how far you were from the facilities. In terms of your refund request, you stayed on site and used our facilities for one night. hence why you received £25, which is half of your two-night fee. We genuinely value your feedback, and we will continue working diligently to make necessary improvements to our campsite. We hope you would consider giving us another chance in the future and experiencing the positive changes we aim to implement. Once again, we apologise for the disappointment you encountered during your stay, and we appreciate your valuable feedback as it helps us become better at what we do. Warm regards, Amy

Local attractions

Where to take your walking boots first? Local strolls might take you out onto the Pendle Way (which you can access via a network of footpaths leading from the farm), to pick up the Pennine Way (five minutes’ drive) or to take in different rural views from the ‘Atom’ artwork in Wycoller Country Park (10 minutes). Not worn your legs out yet? Great - there’s plenty more to explore. Perhaps a climb of mystical Pendle Hill, a woodland walk in the Forest of Bowland or an outing to the Yorkshire Dales National Park? All are about half an hour away by car. Should you reach a point at which you need a sit down, a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (25 minutes’ drive) is a good option, as it means you’ll still be able to survey the scenery at a more leisurely pace. A stroll around Skipton (20 minutes) might also be on the cards, taking in the priory and castle as you go.
