  • On a working farm between the Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales
  • Close to the Pennine Way; 20 minutes' drive to Skipton
  • Three pubs within walking distance; easy access from the M65
Planning a walk or few as part of your break? Maybe in the Yorkshire Dales or the Forest of Bowland… or on the Pennine Way… and not forgetting other top spots like Pendle Hill and Gisburn Forest… If you reckon that sounds like a pretty enticing collection of places to explore, the place to stay is Shay Gate Farm, just outside Laneshawbridge on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. This well-placed spot is about half an hour’s drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland, five minutes from the Pennine Way and within easy reach of several other excellent walking/biking areas. Getting in, out and all around should be pretty easy too – Colne is about two and a half miles away, and the M65 about four miles. The setup on site is a family-friendly one, with lots of space for the kids to run about and burn off energy. Facilities include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a communal fridge, and you’re allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals if you like (it’s a 20-minute drive to Skipton’s market to stock up on local produce for the grill). There are, however, three country pubs within walking distance if you’d rather someone else cooked you a meal.

What customers say

This campsite offers a chill, friendly vibe with gorgeous countryside views. Guests loved the unique farm-themed converted trailers for showers/toilets, always clean. Choosing your own spot, helpful staff, and nearby pubs were big pluses. Some mentioned sloped fields and noise from groups, but most loved it and want to come back.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The views were amazing. There was a pizza stand over the bank holiday, which was very nice.

It is in a very nice location.

The showers were unique. I haven’t seen anything like them before. I liked them

It was a little busy over the bank holiday (which was expected), but lovely and quiet once the crowds had gone. Very peaceful

Disliked The showers were nice but the toilets were dirty during the bank holiday - I think this was due to there being a lot of people staying at the time and kids using them unattended, because they were cleaned every day. They were much cleaner after the bank holiday when most of the people left.

It was very busy on the bank holiday and people were very loud. People were blasting music at half 11pm, and talking very loudly. Lots of kids running around well after 11pm. It was not like this after the bank holiday though - once the crowds left it was peaceful

Not many completely flat pitches for tents. But the slope was not bad

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked The view was great. The young lad checking everyone in was fantastic and would have gone above and beyond had I didn’t decline his offer of help.

Disliked It’s not level and on a significant slope. The toilets weren’t particularly clean. Pitches for motor homes were straight on the side of the main road into the site and lots of noise.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Really good facilities. Plenty of space. Local town only 10 mins away. Staff really friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed staying at the campsite would absolutely stay again.

Disliked Wood really expensive and can only purchase from site, also didn't burn to well. Was cheap to rent the firepit and also got a starter kit which was brilliant.

Local attractions

Where to take your walking boots first? Local strolls might take you out onto the Pendle Way (which you can access via a network of footpaths leading from the farm), to pick up the Pennine Way (five minutes’ drive) or to take in different rural views from the ‘Atom’ artwork in Wycoller Country Park (10 minutes). Not worn your legs out yet? Great - there’s plenty more to explore. Perhaps a climb of mystical Pendle Hill, a woodland walk in the Forest of Bowland or an outing to the Yorkshire Dales National Park? All are about half an hour away by car. Should you reach a point at which you need a sit down, a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (25 minutes’ drive) is a good option, as it means you’ll still be able to survey the scenery at a more leisurely pace. A stroll around Skipton (20 minutes) might also be on the cards, taking in the priory and castle as you go.
