  • Lake District pop-up site in the foothills of Blencathra
  • Keswick, Skiddaw and Helvellyn all within a 10-minute drive
  • Simple, spacious pitches with a stream for paddling
The owners of Low Hollows reckon they’ve got one of the most stunning locations in the Lake District… and it’s easy to see why they love it. This Cumbria pop-up site is in the foothills of Blencathra, so it’s a scenic place, and it’s easy to get to as well – it's just a little way off the A66. That handy position means that it’s easy to get to the village of Threlkeld, a mile away, for two excellent pubs and a coffee shop – or continue on to the bigger market town of Keswick, less than 10 minutes’ drive away. The Keswick to Penrith bus route stops in the village too, so you can get out and about easily without taking the car. And where might your outings take you? Well, it’s all about the open air around here: climbing, horse riding, canoeing and shooting are all within five miles, and there’s a golf course less than a mile away. Cyclists can head out on the C2C (Coast to Coast) route from the village, while walkers take strolls along the Keswick to Threlkeld railway line path. More intrepid types can tick off several Lakeland fells nearby, including Skiddaw and Helvellyn as well as Blencathra. Sounds rather like you’ll need time to chill out back on site – and handily there’s plenty of space for that, plus a stream for soothing tired feet. Barbecues are permitted on the pitches, and you’re welcome to bring dogs and kids (there’s a whole lot of field for them to scamper about in). Facilities are on the low-key side, with just showers and toilets (two of each for the ladies and gents) and a washing-up area.

What customers say

Lovely spot for walkers, easy on the pocket with great views. Roomy pitches, chilled vibe. Basic but clean loos and hot showers. Watch for sloped bits and queues when busy. Some noise from others heard.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great location, plenty of space and friendly relaxed feel to the campsite

Disliked Most people were considerate and respectful, but unfortunately a couple of parties, including the one right beside us, were not at all. They played music and talked very loudly until 2am and nobody polices this. Toilet facilities were adequate as it wasn’t incredibly busy, but wouldn’t be great if the site was at full capacity.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great fields, tons of space, good showers and toilets.

Disliked Toilet block was exceptionally hot inside. We also had the unfortunate experience of noisy drunken people in the tents next to us who were up drinking and playing music until past 2am. Given families with young children were there, and many were taking on the challenge of local fells, it was a shame, and disrespectful of that group. No fault of the site though.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely, quiet campsite with a peaceful atmosphere. I also appreciated that there was hot water available for washing the dishes.

Disliked Some parts of the ground were a little uneven, but there were still plenty of flat spots where you could easily pitch a tent.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked everything except the road

Disliked it was raining anthe road to the tent pitch was very slippery as it is on the slope. I had to ask srangersto push my car to be able to drive up the road. It might help to put some rubble into the ruts.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked There's definitely a charm about it, location is great especially for Blencathra, it's beautiful, it's cheap, I loved the swallows in the barn, I would go back there.

Disliked The steep slope, I pitched there one night and was sliding downhill on my camping mat. The next night I pitched at the bottom and had 3 loud young men next door to me, swearing and playing music till 12pm at least. Needed someone to do the rounds and sort them out.
After a rainy night I struggled to get the van back up the hill!
Also it would be great if you cut the grass on the first field.
