Got a yen for luxury glamping and spectacular countryside views? Carriage House Glamping Pods in the North York Moors National Park might have been designed just for you – and it’s a top spot for moorland hiking, swimming off sandy beaches and stargazing too. Set in the hamlet of Everley, the site is 15 minutes’ drive from seaside Scarborough and about the same to the walking and cycling trails in the North Riding Forest Park. The cosy and comfy pods sleep up to four guests (best suited to a family with up to two kids) and come heated and fully insulated. Inside each one there’s a double bed, sofa bed and coffee table, smart TVs that link to your devices for nights surfing Netflix, and everything you need in stylish kitchen corners to prep meals. The pods also have shower rooms, and a full set of linen and towels is provided. Step out onto your private decking with dining chairs and loungers from which to take in views down the Forge Valley. After dark, the whole site is illuminated by solar light, which doesn’t detract from what’s happening in the skies above – the national park is a designated dark skies area so keep your eyes peeled for the Milky Way on clear nights. Other handy facilities include secure and private on-site parking, lockable cycle storage sheds for those of you following regional cycling routes, and privacy fencing around each pod.

Local attractions

No doubt a day at the seaside will be on the cards. Scarborough (15 minutes’ drive) has two beaches to choose from, a clifftop castle to explore and an intriguing sculpture trail to follow along the waterfront. At Whitby (half an hour), you can search for Dracula amid dramatic ruins of the abbey, go digging for jet on the beach and sample Yorkshire gin at Whitby Distillery. If you can entice the kids away from the seaside, Dalby Forest (10 minutes) has walking, running and cycling trails for various levels, as well as the Gruffalo Trail for younger visitors. If you’re after something a little more demanding, try the archery sessions and paintballing at Dalby Activity Centre (15 minutes) or the adrenaline-inducing treetop rope courses at Go Ape Dalby Forest (half an hour). When a quiet stroll among pretty scenery is what’s required, the historic village of Hackness (five minutes) is springboard to gentle woodland ambles. And of course, you can easily spend weeks discovering new hiking trails or biking routes across untamed moorland in the North York Moors National Park.
