  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The campsite and pitches were well maintained. I liked the board at the entrance to indicate where your pitch was as well as having toilet blocks at either end of the campsite. All other campers were really nice and friendly. Lovely pub just down the road if you fancy a drink or some food. Owners were really accommodating and friendly. Thank you so much for having us.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The site was well looked after on the edge of a village. Grass was well mown and pitches of well kept gravel. Lovely surroundings and nice size of site.

Disliked Facilities were poor. The toilet block our end had one toilet, basin and shower in together in a small room for each sex, thus someone having a shower made the toilet inaccessible. They were old but fairly clean but really needed replacing.
The washing up area was in an adjacent "shed" with just one sink with an unfitting plug and a light which was so covered in cobwebs and dirt that very little light was given out. It was too expensive for the facilities provided. I can't comment on the other toilet block at the other end of the site.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us. Our new toilet/shower block is currently under construction, in the meantime there are photos of what we currently have on offer on pitchup so you can make a judgement before you book as to whether what we offer is acceptable for you to use.

Liked Nice peaceful site with a good sized pitch and lots of space between each one.
Great communication: got a text the day before saying how to get into the site as part of the road is currently closed.
A short walk into the village with a shop and The Crown pub.
Toilet and shower was clean well maintained.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Quiet, countryside campsite
Tidy, well maintained pitches

Disliked Very old, smelly toilet ( maybe due to being next to waste point) Just used own facilities
No info about walks for dogs, walk along river into Richmond... No directions

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us. As you where located in the middle of the site you had the choice of using either toilet block located at either end of the site! I have used the stone toilet you have mentioned many times myself and have not found them smelly or particularly old and had no other complaints to that effect.
Also if you had looked at the notice board at the back of the sitemap board you would have found a map showing the route to Richmond along with the name of an app for local walks.

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
