  • Peaceful 20-acre marina location in the Staffordshire countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Lichfield; 20 minutes to Drayton Manor Theme Park
  • Barbecues and picnic tables provided; short walk to a dog-friendly pub
Whether it’s picnics looking out over the marina or lazy mornings walking along the Coventry Canal, there’s plenty of scope for peaceful activities at Kings Orchard Marina in the middle of the Staffordshire countryside. This is a pretty marina location with 20 acres of space, all landscaped and maintained to a high standard, with a marina basin for views and a canal, narrowboat hire and local pub 10 minutes’ walk away. For any keen explorers, the icing on the cake might be that historic Lichfield is 10 minutes’ drive to the west. That means you can explore the medieval city’s 12th-century cathedral, market square and the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum by day before heading back in the evening to use the site’s food prep area to build a barbecue spread on the grills provided. Handily, there's a food shop under five minutes' drive away. The free-to-use barbecues and picnic tables dotted around the site are useful facilities for those quality times. As for features of convenience, Kings Orchard Marina also has toilets, showers, waste disposal and an Elsan unit. With the Staffordshire countryside on all sides, walk to your heart’s content, but don’t forget that real ales, traditional pub fare and a beer garden await at the local dog-friendly country pub alongside the Coventry Canal. This place, 10 minutes’ walk away, is a good spot for those of you who have brought dogs on your holiday.

Liked: Walk to local pub

Disliked: Upon arrival drive into site pot hole’s horrendous. Checked in went to our pitch was nub ends every where, dog mess on the pitch. Owners of the barges do not adhere to the rules dogs of the lead which ended up in a dog called patch jumping all over me, ended up with mud of the paws over my back my bottoms by handbag, no site warden to advise of what happened after 5pm, I did advise reception the next day in which I was given a token to wash my clothes, I would give the facilities a 4 out of 10 need abit of tlc. Only washing up part was on the other side of the marina.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: The site is great with walks nearby. Toilets and showers. Staff very accommodating. Would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for the initial issue with pitch 1.

Disliked: When we arrived we were placed on pitch 1 which was flooded and no room for car parking as it’s tiny, not worth £50 odd for 2 nights! To be fair to those at reception, they were accommodating as they placed us on an alternative pitch with space to park the car, however had they been full, we would have been lumbered with entry and exit to our caravan through water on a tiny pitch, having to walk to the car park to get to the car. If we hadn't have been relocated then Id most likely have turned back and gone home. Pitch 1 is not suitable for a touring caravan and is only suitable for small camper vans. Id suggest that the site rethink allowing bookings from those with tourers on pitch 1, alternatively extend the pitch and resolve the flooding issue. Wifi is non existent on the touring pitches. I wouldn't stay again for fear of being lumbered with the unsuitable pitch in pitch 1. The rest are spacious, clean and suitable.

Disliked: Arrived after hours and facilities were locked. After speaking to another camper the next day, you have to pay a £20 deposit for a key to the facilities during office hours. We borrowed their key and facilities were clean enough but run down

Local attractions

Strap yourself in for a ride and put your bravery to the test at Drayton Manor Theme Park (20 minutes’ drive) or take things at a slower pace around Beacon Park (10 minutes), where there are 70 acres of wildlife and gardens. Other historical detours could include a visit to The Staffordshire Regiment Museum (10 minutes), a military museum, or the 150-acre National Memorial Arboretum (10 minutes). Outdoor activities on the mind? There’s a brief stroll around The Green Fairy Woods (10 minutes), great for kids, or miniature golf, sports courts, nature trails and play areas around Beacon Park (10 minutes). SnowDome (15 minutes) runs skiing, snowboarding and ice skating sessions or lessons. Meanwhile, Go Ape courses, bike rides and walks are a staple in the Cannock Chase District (20 minutes).
