  • No-frills eco-friendly meadowland site a 20-minute drive from Lincoln
  • Doddington Hall 10 minutes’ drive; Sundown Adventureland 15 minutes
  • Free-range chickens; communal cookouts; pub a 10-minute walk away
Occupying green meadowlands in Lincolnshire, Oakwell Farm makes a lovely home for your holiday – this is a place where you'll get to share the space with a large variety of wild and not-so-wild things, from colourful butterflies in the hedgerows to the owners’ horses and free-range chickens. And those mighty oaks, of course… This is wild camping with a hint of modern convenience, in the shape of the bathroom, for example (which is housed in a horse trailer and has a composting toilet and a gas-powered shower), and the washing-up area. In line with the owners’ environmental beliefs, guests are requested to use eco-friendly products – but don’t worry if you’ve forgotten to pack any: shower gel, shampoo and washing-up liquid are also available on site. When it comes to food, the resident chickens are generous with their eggs, and for anything else you might need, the owners will be happy to point you in the direction of small local businesses. There's also a shop in Newton-on-Trent (five minutes’ drive) and a supermarket in Saxilby (10 minutes), not to mention a traditional pub serving food 10 minutes" walk away in Laughterton. Saturday nights are all about the communal campfire cookouts, where you can exchange cookery tips or compare hiking itineraries with the other guests. And after dinner you can settle in for a night of stargazing: the dark skies here are pretty spectacular. Out for a walk? A path skirting the River Trent starts at Torksey Lock (five minutes), while nature reserves on the outskirts of Lincoln include Spalford Woods (10 minutes), with its sandy heath landscape, and Skellingthorpe Old Wood (15 minutes).

Local attractions

An Elizabethan mansion from the late 16th century, Doddington Hall & Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) is renowned for its collection of Flemish tapestries and decorative arts. In addition to formal gardens, there is also a vast area of parkland with bluebell meadows and other seasonal wildflowers. With rides including the action-packed Rocky Mountain Railroad and Robin Hood’s Merry Adventure, plus a Yellow Brick Road (complete with characters from ‘The Wizard of Oz’) snaking through the trees, Sundown Adventureland (15 minutes) is a family-friendly amusement park that's worth a day out. Dominated by the Gothic towers of its cathedral, Lincoln (20 minutes) is a historic city with interesting museums like the International Bomber Command Centre, with a Wall of Names honouring those who lost their lives while serving with the RAF during World War II. The Lincoln Museum houses paintings by artists such as L.S. Lowry and J.M.W. Turner.
