Widemouth Bay Caravan Park

7.6

This campground/park does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Coastal park set in over 50 acres of grounds
  • A short drive from the surf schools and beach at Bude
  • Free heated pool, free wifi, clubhouse, kids' club and bar

Free! The price of zilch is what you’ll pay to keep the kids happy at Widemouth Bay Caravan Park a few miles from Bude, which is bound to result in wide-mouthed grins for all concerned...

This large and lively family park has kids’ clubs run by the cunning Foxy, free evening entertainment by the Stripey Coats, crazy golf to go loopy at and an indoor heated pool, which are also…free. As is the wifi in the clubhouse. Huzzah.

Widemouth Bay Caravan Park’s location is also pretty smilesome: on a hilltop overlooking the Cornish countryside and the fab Widemouth Bay with its three miles of sand. There are over 50 acres to lose yourself in around the park and pretend you never have to go home, with the takeaway, well-stocked shop and tasty meals at the bar keeping you sorted for nosh and a launderette looking after the essentials.

Looking for yet more things to do on site? Challenge the kids on the amusements or show them how to hustle on the pool table – letting them beat you should result in even more wide smiles…

The three entertainment girls. They were absolutely amazing.

    Disliked:

The first day our friends little girl was bitten by a dog. Luckily not biting her but puncturing her jumper. The manager was great but it affected the first day of the holiday and now little one is nervous of dogs.
She then slipped down wet steps leaving a Nasty whelp on her lower back. , no slippery step sign around but the steps were painted. Could do with a slippery when wet sign. They were so slippy.
My son caught his toe on a loose tile but we could not inform the lifeguard because he was afraid for his life apparently.
The lifeguard on duty the day before was great he let the kids use inflatables and scored Thier dives out of 10! The next day, the lifeguard seemed to have it in for us. The kids were doing what they done the day before, the lifeguard informed us it wasn't on. We tried explaining we were allowed to do it the day before. He was having none of it. My friend put his daughter on his shoulders and walked with her. He was told he wasn't allowed to do it.
My son stepped off of the pool(no jump. No dive) he was approached by the lifeguard again to be told one more time he's out. My husband was sat a foot away. The lifeguard then walked back to his chair and kept looking over smirking as if it was a game. My husband got up went to the lifeguard told him what he thought then left with my son.
I went to complain to be told he was right in what he was doing. I tried to explain its confusing for the children etc. But the receptionist was having none of it.
I then went to get the kids from the pool, then met my husband outside of reception and waited for our friends to come out.
I took the girls to the toilet and when coming out spotted the manager and receptionist by the front door. It went very quiet when I walked past. That's extremely unprofessional. We should have been spoken about in private not in the entertainment room.

The manager came to us and said she wasn't accepting acts of threatening behaviour towards her staff, the lifeguard was scared to walk to his car incase he was attacked!! Were not monsters. Nothing like that happened. The lifeguard was bullying the children. Even a different holidaymaker said he was out of order.
We explained the kids were confused being allowed to do something one day and not the next. Give the manager her due she said she will make sure they all sing from the same song sheet in future. It's just a pity we won't be returning to see if it's happened!

The park as a whole is run down, it needs a good tidy up!
The roads could do with redoing.
    The showers were filthy.
    The toilets were dirty.
The pool is falling apart. We actually seen the lifeguard in the pool resticking tiles back down.

I know they're coming to the end of the season even had staff at the bar counting down the hours til close but they finish on the 31st. It seemed they'd already switched off. 😐

Thanks to the stripeys though they made the holiday!

Local attractions

Widemouth Bay is where you’ll find the surf: if you’re new to launching yourself happily into the waves there are surf and bodyboarding schools dotted all around here and Bude, and Newquay is within 50 minutes' drive.

Bude less than 10 minutes by car has a couple of excellent beaches: Summerleaze, to have a dip in the sea pool at the bottom of the cliffs and to bag a beach hut for hire so you can pretend for one fleeting afternoon that it’s your very own, and Crooklets, which you can reach by a short stroll from Summerleaze Down. Both beaches, and the sea pool at Summerleaze, are lifeguarded.

The staff at Widemouth Bay Caravan Park recommends a car to see the best of Cornwall, but you won’t have very far to drive to reach most of the main hotspots: the Eden Project is about 50 minutes away, and Tintagel, legendary home of King Arthur and Merlin, is just along the coast.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (19.0 kilometres)
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (34.5 kilometres)
  • Rock Beach (36.6 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Tintagel Old Post Office (19.0 kilometres)
  • Lawrence House (20.5 kilometres)
