General

  • Coastal park set in over 50 acres of grounds
  • A short drive from the surf schools and beach at Bude
  • Free heated pool, free wifi, clubhouse, kids' club and bar

Free! The price of zilch is what you’ll pay to keep the kids happy at Widemouth Bay Caravan Park a few miles from Bude, which is bound to result in wide-mouthed grins for all concerned.

This large and lively family park has kids’ clubs run by the cunning Foxy, free evening entertainment by the Stripey Coats, crazy golf to go loopy at and an indoor heated pool, which are also…free. As is the wifi in the clubhouse. Huzzah.

Widemouth Bay Caravan Park’s location is also pretty smilesome: on a hilltop overlooking the Cornish countryside and the fab Widemouth Bay with its three miles of sand. There are over 50 acres to lose yourself in around the park and pretend you never have to go home, with the takeaway, well-stocked shop and tasty meals at the bar keeping you sorted for nosh and a launderette looking after the essentials.

Looking for yet more things to do on site? Challenge the kids on the amusements or show them how to hustle on the pool table – letting them beat you should result in even more wide smiles…

So disappointed with this site, Touring Caravan pitches were advertised as hard standing,
There were NO hard Standing pitches.
the pitch we were given was grass on a slope, given another pitch again meant to hard standing, a complete mud patch, the whole place was water logged.

everyone was heart broken, this holiday was paid for by mother in law to give daughter and family a nice holiday and with young baby 2 month old.
children had to play in mud yes weather,
John fowlers should have checked this site before bookings . Not like brochure
All the hard standing needs to upgraded. Grass on site was so long it hadn't seen a lawn mower for ages, saddest thing is to see people with brand new tents, throwing them away as ground so wet pegs kept coming out and they were trying to pitch on sodden water logged ground.

We camped on the overflow pitch and found the views to be glorious. We had a beautiful view of the sea. The difficulty was finding a flat area to pitch, but we made do being on the hill. The pool was lovely and very clean, and the lifeguard on duty was very helpful and good at monitoring the numbers of people coming and going (max capacity is 33). The food in the restaurant was lovely and the bar well priced. The arcade was a little old fashioned however the kids were happy, and so were we as there was none of this "ticket" nonsense (collect 1000 and get a pencil!). We only used one toilet/shower block however found this to be nice and clean and tidy. Entertainment was ok, the children's party dances were fun for the little ones.

    Disliked:

On our arrival, we overheard two members of staff discussing the fact that syringes had been found in the second toilet block and we made sure our group stayed well away from this block!

On our second night we were woken to the sounds of a fist fight going on in the main camping area. On getting up in the morning, there were police cars on the site, supervising 2 families who were being kicked off.

Although it is appreciated that the management were doing everything they could to prevent any more trouble, and had closed off the toilet block to dispose of the used syringes, it did not sit well with us as a family with small children. We will not be staying here again.

Local attractions

Widemouth Bay is where you’ll find the surf: if you’re new to launching yourself happily into the waves there are surf and bodyboarding schools dotted all around here and Bude.

Or within 50 minutes’ drive you’ll reach Newquay, Cornwall’s surfing capital, where natch there are surf schools too and where you can also learn the ropes in sailing and other watery pursuits. If you’re there in August, make some time to spectate at the international surfing championships at Fistral Beach – you’ll be up to scratch to compete next year…

There’s a three-mile stretch of sand at Widemouth Bay for those who prefer to stay on towels rather than boards, with hundreds of rockpools strewn around the bay for spotting local critters.

The well-known resort of Bude is less than ten minutes by car from the caravan park and has a couple of excellent beaches: Summerleaze, to have a dip in the sea pool at the bottom of the cliffs and to bag a beach hut for hire so you can pretend for one fleeting afternoon that it’s your very own, and Crooklets, which you can reach by a short stroll from Summerleaze Down. Both beaches, and the sea pool at Summerleaze, are lifeguarded.

The staff at Widemouth Bay Caravan Park recommends a car to see the best of Cornwall, but you won’t have very far to drive to reach most of the main hotspots: the Eden Project is about 50 minutes away, and Tintagel, legendary home of King Arthur and Merlin, is just along the coast.

Slightly further south, follow the A39 inland to Wadebridge and St Columb Major, with quick (or lengthy) detours for fish and chips at Padstow, looking out for Doc Martin at Port Isaac or going beast spotting on Bodmin Moor. The 17 miles of the walking, horse riding and cycling way the Camel Trail run from Padstow along to Wadebridge and Bodmin.

Or just get into the car and see where your whim takes you: anywhere in Cornwall you’ll not be far away from historic houses, green and flowery gardens, cream teas in tiny villages, market towns to browse around and hordes of things to do for the kids.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (18.7 kilometres)
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (34.9 kilometres)
  • Rock Beach (36.3 kilometres)

  • Tintagel Old Post Office (18.7 kilometres)
