General

  • Coastal park set in over 50 acres of grounds
  • A short drive from the surf schools and beach at Bude
  • Free heated pool, free wifi, clubhouse, kids' club and bar

Free! The price of zilch is what you’ll pay to keep the kids happy at Widemouth Bay Caravan Park a few miles from Bude, which is bound to result in wide-mouthed grins for all concerned.

This large and lively family park has kids’ clubs run by the cunning Foxy, free evening entertainment by the Stripey Coats, crazy golf to go loopy at and an indoor heated pool, which are also…free. As is the wifi in the clubhouse. Huzzah.

Widemouth Bay Caravan Park’s location is also pretty smilesome: on a hilltop overlooking the Cornish countryside and the fab Widemouth Bay with its three miles of sand. There are over 50 acres to lose yourself in around the park and pretend you never have to go home, with the takeaway, well-stocked shop and tasty meals at the bar keeping you sorted for nosh and a launderette looking after the essentials.

Looking for yet more things to do on site? Challenge the kids on the amusements or show them how to hustle on the pool table – letting them beat you should result in even more wide smiles…

This site is a member of John Fowler Holidays group.

The view was nice and the clubhouse looked good although we didn't see the entertainment.

    Disliked:

The pool was not big enough for the amount of people so we had to wait for an hour to get in! When in, there was green mold growing on the tiles and there are no showers in that building so we had to walk to the only shower block where one time there was no power. The shower block and toilets were grotty, the net curtains were dirty ... not pleasant!

Great view,awful experience 08/18/2017

    The View.

    Disliked:

This was our first family excursion camping.Looking at the site website, this looked a great starting place.
However,we arrived and found our friends, only to find our 'Premium'electric hook up was on a quite severe slope. We pitched up non the less and settled in.The weather broke early doors the next day,and the site quickly turned into a quagmire. There is no drainage anywhere!!we watched as several people who also recently arrived, pack up and go,that is if they could get out of the boggy ground.Having a tractor on permanent standby says it all.One really unlucky group had the misfortune of having a river of rain water build up on the roadside, then cascade down the hill straight through their tent.I know you cant do anything about the rain, but no drains??really?
We sent the kids into the pool to at least have some fun, but your only allowed 45 minutes in the pool before you get booted out!our friends kids had to pop back as they forgot their goggles, when they returned ,they were not allowed back in,so our children couldn't play together!!
There are 2 toilet blocks on site, but beware!!one shuts down at 5pm,so there was only 1 open for the whole camp throughout the evening.By the morning, they were blocked ,filthy and stinking.
after my son fell over in the mud we had to use the washing machines.between us and our friends, it cost us £36 for 3 loads of washing!
The clubhouse looks very tired, something out of the 80's springs to mind.Prices are quite pricey, nearly £9 for ham, eggs and chips......
The entertainment was dire to say the least, the entertainers just seem to shout unintelligible nonsense constantly,Bingo was a shambles, couldn't hear the numbers,my pregnant wife got spoken to dreadfully by a staff member when i had inadvertently split my kids bingo tickets into 2 blocks of 3 tickets, apparently this is a serious offence in the world of bingo!! Our friends did win a £36 voucher to spend in the "Gift Shop",only to return with a handful of awful cuddly toys and plastic figurines,as that was all you could get.
On the third night, the heavens opened again, and we all had enough and began to pack,As our friends started to lift their ground sheets, there was a horrible stench from the sludge underneath, similar to silage/sewerage!!It really did just cap off the whole experience. We ended up leaving a day early in the end.
I generally hate to complain about anything really, but having worked on a Pontins holiday camp for 5 years, i kind of know what to expect on a holiday like this. The facilities were woefully inadequate for the size of the site, the lack of any kind of basic drainage/soakaways was just unbelievable!even just along the roadsides/pathways to move the rain AROUND the pitches, instead of through it!
i didn't see a single level pitch on the whole site, which isn't mentioned in the info. The whole experience for kids needs to be looked at.We stayed in a caravan at our local John Fowler camp for a weekend, and the staff were brilliant!watchful and mindful, but not strict and overbearing as they were here. The Lifeguard here, had a face like a slapped backside most of the time, and seemed to just be looking for an excuse to ruin some child's day.
Our friends are seasoned campers, and they said it was the worst camping experience they had ever had, they just hoped it hadn't put us off going with them again ,at a different camp.
Sorry if this sounds like whingefest, but we scrimped and saved for this holiday, but this campsite was just a dreadful experience, one which we wont be back to repeat again.

    Not much

    Disliked:

On arrival I went to check in and were told very abruptly to go back in 2 hours at check in time even though I'd received an email prior to arrival saying it were OK to arrive early! Dirty toilets and showers, lack of drainage caused my awning to have an inch of water at one end and the ground surrounding totally water logged and a mud bath. Tents at tourers mixed together also making it noisy at times!

Local attractions

Widemouth Bay is where you’ll find the surf: if you’re new to launching yourself happily into the waves there are surf and bodyboarding schools dotted all around here and Bude.

Or within 50 minutes’ drive you’ll reach Newquay, Cornwall’s surfing capital, where natch there are surf schools too and where you can also learn the ropes in sailing and other watery pursuits. If you’re there in August, make some time to spectate at the international surfing championships at Fistral Beach – you’ll be up to scratch to compete next year…

There’s a three-mile stretch of sand at Widemouth Bay for those who prefer to stay on towels rather than boards, with hundreds of rockpools strewn around the bay for spotting local critters.

The well-known resort of Bude is less than ten minutes by car from the caravan park and has a couple of excellent beaches: Summerleaze, to have a dip in the sea pool at the bottom of the cliffs and to bag a beach hut for hire so you can pretend for one fleeting afternoon that it’s your very own, and Crooklets, which you can reach by a short stroll from Summerleaze Down. Both beaches, and the sea pool at Summerleaze, are lifeguarded.

The staff at Widemouth Bay Caravan Park recommends a car to see the best of Cornwall, but you won’t have very far to drive to reach most of the main hotspots: the Eden Project is about 50 minutes away, and Tintagel, legendary home of King Arthur and Merlin, is just along the coast.

Slightly further south, follow the A39 inland to Wadebridge and St Columb Major, with quick (or lengthy) detours for fish and chips at Padstow, looking out for Doc Martin at Port Isaac or going beast spotting on Bodmin Moor. The 17 miles of the walking, horse riding and cycling way the Camel Trail run from Padstow along to Wadebridge and Bodmin.

Or just get into the car and see where your whim takes you: anywhere in Cornwall you’ll not be far away from historic houses, green and flowery gardens, cream teas in tiny villages, market towns to browse around and hordes of things to do for the kids.
