The small town of Ravello (15 minutes’ drive) punches above its weight with sites like the Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium, an elegant, modernist white structure with a lively music programme that attracts talent from across the world. There are unforgettable views over the coastline from the 13th-century Villa Rufolo. In a deep gorge flanked by rocky mountains, Amalfi (35 minutes) was once a powerful maritime republic; artifacts from those medieval times are on display at the Ancient Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi. If you’re not hitting the beach or booking a sea excursion, check out the main drag (Via Lorenzo d’Amalfi), where you can buy pretty artisanal sandals – and delicious homemade ice cream, of course. Set a full day aside for a visit to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii (35 minutes), the expansive ruins of the ancient city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Highlights include the colourful murals of the Villa of the Mysteries, well-preserved mosaic floors and a vast amphitheatre.
