Domaine du Der

Lac du Der-Chantecoq, about three kilometres away, is one of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe, and it’s a particularly popular spot for birdwatchers. It’s a great place to see all sorts of water birds throughout the year, but at its best during the crane migrations in spring and autumn. The 38-kilometre path around the lake’s shoreline is an excellent way to see it, whether you bike all the way along it or walk it in sections. There are also beach areas, fishing spots and various places to launch small boats, canoes or paddleboards. In summer, the inflatable assault course at Aqua Der (20 minutes’ drive) makes a fun outing. Elsewhere nearby you can take the 7.5-kilometre walking trail from the site or follow a bike route around the area’s timber-framed churches. For a different day out, follow the Champagne route from Vitry-le-François (half an hour) for tastings, visit the castle in Brienne-le-Château (half an hour) or try out all the rides at Nigloland theme park (45 minutes).
