If you’re off to the Champagne-Ardenne region with the aim of truly immersing yourself in nature, you’ll certainly need to take a good look at Domaine du Der. Tucked away in peaceful and green countryside close to Lac du Der-Chantecoq, this is a fabulous location for a break – and it gets even better when you see the accommodation that’s on offer.
That’s because here you’ll be staying in a cosy treehouse, supported by three century-old trees and about four metres above ground level. It’s a pretty special place to hide away for a little while, looking out over the surrounding forest and lakes, listening to the birds singing and perhaps spotting some of them up close as they flit about between the branches.
Built from hard-wearing larch wood, the treehouse is a comfortable place to stay, with its own bathroom and kitchenette as well as proper beds made up for your arrival. Heating, board games and nature books are all provided too, and there’s a covered deck area where you can sip your evening wine/morning coffee while looking out at your surroundings. Breakfast is also available as an added extra.
You may find that you become slightly addicted to spending time sitting out on that deck and watching the natural world, but it’s worth getting out and about if you can – perhaps hiring bikes on site to ride to the lake or heading over there on foot. The surrounding area also has a lot to offer in terms of outdoor activities, local markets and traditional villages – Outines (five minutes’ drive away) is the closest of these.

Llocs d'interès
Lac du Der-Chantecoq, about three kilometres away, is one of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe, and it’s a particularly popular spot for birdwatchers. It’s a great place to see all sorts of water birds throughout the year, but at its best during the crane migrations in spring and autumn.
The 38-kilometre path around the lake’s shoreline is an excellent way to see it, whether you bike all the way along it or walk it in sections. There are also beach areas, fishing spots and various places to launch small boats, canoes or paddleboards. In summer, the inflatable assault course at Aqua Der (20 minutes’ drive) makes a fun outing.
Elsewhere nearby you can take the 7.5-kilometre walking trail from the site or follow a bike route around the area’s timber-framed churches. For a different day out, follow the Champagne route from Vitry-le-François (half an hour) for tastings, visit the castle in Brienne-le-Château (half an hour) or try out all the rides at Nigloland theme park (45 minutes).
