Answers on a postcard please to Coalbeck Caravan Park… in a central setting for touring the Lake District and nearby coastline, this haven has views of the region’s woods, fields and hills from its spacious grounds. Getting you to linger a little longer before heading out for explores, the spacious pitches at Coalbeck Caravan Park are prime for spotting creatures like rare red squirrels among the pretty planters, and are a suntrap when the rays come out too. But if rain’s threatening? A spa next door to the site means you can book in for a treatment (or three…?). Back outdoors, the site’s a five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake – one of the only bodies of water in the region with no settlements around it – so it’s got a peaceful vibe yet is close enough to many of the main sights in the northern part of the lakes. Case in point: it’s around a 15-minute drive to historic towns like Keswick and Cockermouth and about a half an hour to the coast. If you’re looking for leisure without having to get behind the wheel, Lake District Wildlife Park’s 24 acres of land home to more than 100 animals is a five-minute walk away. You’ll also need to ditch the car to visit The Lakes Distillery: this artisan gin, whisky and vodka producing place a 25-minute stroll from the park has tastings, tours and a small shop where you can wander off with some of its wares.

Kleiner, freundlicher & makellos sauberer Platz mit Fokus auf Ruhe. Lob für hilfsbereite Besitzer (Sid!), eigene Toiletten pro Stellplatz. Einrichtungen top, gute Duschen. Ideal für Lake District. Einzig Dusche/Spülbecken werden wegen kleiner Größe kaum bemängelt. Sehr empfohlen, viele wollen wiederkommen.

Positiv Sid was so friendly and helpful a really pleasant experience. Site is clean well kept and located in a very peaceful surrounding with the lake within walking distance where you can fish, swim, paddle board etc. Some brilliant pubs also within walking distance. WiFi very good.

Negativ Small shop on site would be beneficial as none near by.

Positiv Everything about this place. From the owners Sid and Liz who are superbly friendly and accommodating, to the location and the dawn chorus of gibbons, yes gibbons!, sheep and cows! The facilities are the cleanest most immaculate I've ever come across also! I came away reluctantly, wanting to stay longer, and feeling totally rested after 3 nights here.

We’re on a 10 day tour and Sid’s loo and shower has won our vote as the best we’ve come across , each pitch has their own loo this was so nice ! And the shower a really large wet room with hot powerful shower ! Cleanest nicest facilities thank you Sid 🏆
The views from the site were outstanding also and Sid’s knowledge of the area where to walk to roam and what not was invaluable !

Positiv What a fab little site. Just a few statics and just a handful of tourer pitches. Each tourer gets their own toilet and there is one large shared shower room, which doesn't sound a lot but the person:shower ratio is still well advantageous to most larger sites. There's some great dog friendly walks straight off the site. The lakes wildlife park is more or less opposite. It's also on a bus route (give or take a couple of hundred metres) if you wanted to venture into Bassenthwaite.
We came to climb Catbells but unfortunately Storm Floris made the weather a little unpredictable so we visited the Wildlife park, did a couple of local walks and visited the Castle Inn (10 mins walk away) instead. The Castle Inn does a Swim and Sunday Lunch deal too which is worth looking at. The owner was extremely attentive and was able to advise on anything asked.
We would love to return!

Cockermouth, on the other hand, about the same distance to the south east, is just the place for meandering through medieval and Georgian alleyways under castle walls. Or for classic Lake District outdoorsy options instead, Derwentwater's walking and cycling circuit (set aside about half a day to complete if strolling) takes half an hour to reach in the car. To break up traipsing around the tarns inland, Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty is 40 minutes by car, while underground explores at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale are 45 minutes away. If you fancy staying above ground and sauntering southwards, Lake Ullswater steamer cruises are also 45 minutes from the park and Lake Windermere is the place to waterski (an hour and five minutes away from Coalbeck Caravan Park). To scale one of the region’s highest peaks, Scafell Pike takes an hour and 15 minutes to reach.
