When you’re looking for something a bit different for your sojourn in the Yorkshire Dales, Lower Wensleydale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite might just come up trumps. The site is tucked into a sheltered disused quarry that has now been happily reclaimed by nature, so you can set up pitch surrounded by colourful wild flowers, mosses and mature trees. Ducks and rabbits roam freely, and there are relics of a stone kiln near the pitches. At five minutes’ drive from shops, pubs and restaurants in the lively Dales market town of Leyburn, this North Yorkshire gem is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to non-members as well as members, with discounted rates for members. The price displayed is the member rate; non-members will need to pay the £15/night extra or buy a £69 membership. Membership is worth considering if you’re likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the coming year – it brings discounts at more than 140 UK sites, plus other perks including access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance, discounts on days out and savings on top brands. As with all Club sites, amenities are good. You can expect accessible facility blocks, dishwashing sinks and visitor inspo in the information room. There’s also a dog-exercise area and many more walks from the pitches.

  • If you choose the membership option, your membership details will be issued within five working days once the booking is fully paid. A 14-day cooling-off period from the booking date allows for cancellation of the membership and a refund of any fees paid.

Wegbeschreibung

Please use these directions for the final approach and not satnav, due to unsuitable roads for towing: From the east on the A684: turn right about 0.75 mile past the railway bridge and just before the Pheasant Inn at Harmby. Cross the railway bridge, immediately turn left and follow signs to the site entrance. From the west on the A684: turn left just past the Pheasant Inn at Harmby; then as above. The route from M6 junction 37 via Sedbergh is not advised, being narrow in places. The immediate approach road to the site is narrow, with steep blind bends (look for traffic mirrors on bends).

Your first stop might be buzzing Leyburn (five minutes’ drive), where you can buy essentials, go on the hunt for antiques and dine in style. You can also tour an artisan chocolate maker, or hike up the Leyburn Shawl ridge for views over the dales. If your dates coincide, catch the occasional Wensleydale Railway steam train from Leyburn station (five minutes) for a chug through North Yorkshire countryside to Bedale (20 minutes), home of indie shops and a fine-dining restaurant. Another gorgeous North Yorkshire town to investigate is Richmond (also 20 minutes), home to a medieval castle, a Georgian theatre and a cinema in a repurposed Victorian station. You can have numerous exciting days out in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (10 minutes). Take the kids to see birds of prey flying at Bolton Castle (15 minutes) or the bizarre labyrinths and sculptures at The Forbidden Corner (15 minutes). Go deep underground to see limestone formations at White Scar Cave (50 minutes), or take selfies by spectacular Aysgarth Falls (20 minutes).
