Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

Em va agradar We have been visiting the Crown every year for the last 6 years usually tent based by the river and have never had an issue what so ever! Rich and Caroline and their wonderful family have always been so kind and welcoming to us. Due to going later in the year and heavily pregnant we chose to stay in the otter cabin this year which is brilliantly placed by the pub side. We enjoyed spending the Mason family’s last weekend at the crown with them. The Cabin was cozy, clean and comfortable. We loved the electric heater during the cooler season along with the cabin having extra seating space with the L shaped couch which wonderfully pulls out into a bed for 2 if needed. The cabin had lots of space and with a working fridge and kettle which was really useful when the weather turned wet and cold in the evening. The cabin had a convenient space for cooking by the river and was close enough to the toilets. We can’t wait to visit again next year with our little boy! The cabin is perfect for introducing the little ones to camping! 100% recommend!

Caravana in situ Heron's Nest

Em va agradar Loved this little short stay, was bouncing down with rain but that didn’t ruin our stay.
We had a lovely meal and bottle of wine at the Crown then back to the caravan to fall asleep listening to the river flowing. Staff are so friendly and helpful, can’t wait to return when the campsite is back open.

The tent was so spacious and clean
There were sockets to charge phones up on benches which were under cover.
Fantastic value for money

No em va agradar One of the beds was extremely creaky and uncomfortable, the springs were sticking out and it made for a bad night's sleep.
There were no fairy lights or lanterns as advertised so we were in the dark barring one small torch we brought.
No music in the pub and felt like everyone could hear each other's conversations.
WiFi was none existent which was worrying as I couldn't keep in contact with my husband and young children.

The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
