  • Well-maintained family-run north Wales pub site by the river Alwen
  • In Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr; edge of Snowdonia 15 minutes' drive
  • Alpaca walks and feeding on site; river fishing permitted
Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Quiet site, beautiful setting by the river. Food and drink in the pub was reasonably priced and our meals were super nice . Staff friendly, landlord even got us milk from shop as we'd forgotten it. Pitches were level and large. There was also alpacas on site and due to being on the riverside, there was lots of wildlife.

Disliked Crossing the river to access the site,

Meadow unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Absolutely lovely, would recommend. Beautiful location, good facilities, characterful family run pub and friendly locals. Oh - and Alpaca's on demand.

Disliked You are staying by a river, so if of a certain age, needing to get up in the night - you will be.

Alpaca Area - Oak bell tent (four person)

Liked We have just come back from glamping with the alpacas as a family. We thoroughly enjoyed our time meeting and feeding the alpacas. It's a beautiful setting with the river and surrounding countryside. We were lucky enough to enjoy a swim as the weather was amazing. The owners are all so friendly and my daughter loved their dog. They have kitchen facilities and compost toilets as well as toilets in the crown inn. They provide food which we enjoyed. They have a pool table. They have fires and you can buy wood. We stayed in the oak tent and felt we had lots of space to play bowles. They have chickens and sheep you can also feed. We met a couple of friendly horses further down whilst walking near by it was idyllic and an enjoyable chilled break. I would return again.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Imagine a lovely drive through north Wales - you're on a long road (B5105 going west) with a lovely hilly view. The road starts to go downhill before sweeping to the left. The pub comes into view at the bottom of that hill. You park up next to a flowing river and make your way into this quaint old pub; on your way in some of the locals are conversing comfortably in Welsh on a picnic table outside. You go into the bar to check-in and are met with the best welcome you've ever had. You don't get verbal instructions about where to pitch-up or shown your accommodation on a map but you get taken to it by staff as well as briefed on the facilities available and how to use them. The staff onsite make sure all party members are aware of the facilities and rules. During your stay you see staff wandering around onsite saying hello to guests and making sure everything is clean and ship-shape. You make friends with the other campers on site. You can make a lovely meal by the river with your own cooking facilities then turn in for the night falling asleep and waking up to the sound of flowing water. Oh...and there are alpacas. :)

LOVED
1. The fantastic customer service and the community feel.
2. The vast variety of accommodation (rougher camping, flat riverside pitches for roof tents, glamping, innovative cabins).
3. Clean compost toilets with two sinks.
4. On site pub for refreshments and good food.
5. It's a quiet site - no music.
6. Wildlife (a variety of birds and bats).
7. Alpacas, obviously.

Disliked The lack of some sort of hand drying facility at the compost toilets. I hope an eco-friendly and sustainable option exists out there. In the summer wafting my hands dry is not an issue at all - they dry in less than a minute, but they'd be cold in any other season. This can be solved by remembering to take your own towel/hand towel to the loos - I was unprepared in all honesty but this would help with convenience.

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
