Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open every day but Tuesday and Wednesday for most of the year, and every day during the summer holidays) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

喜欢 We absolutely loved this place, not too many people crammed in either. Very friendly staff. The lake is so much fun, we spent the whole day paddle boarding and swimming. You have to get there early as the areas around the lake get filled up quite quickly. The lake is very safe to swim and paddle In. It was quite windy in the campsite but when on lake you don’t notice it at all as very sheltered. Clean toilets and showers, Lots of space around us which we liked too. We were camped near a field with football nets which was great for my boys. They made lots of nice friends whilst playing in and out of the lake. Lovely setting, lovely views

不喜欢 The cafe was quite expensive and service quite slow. The shop was more of a gift shop, very small and not at all equipped for camping.
We had to be quiet after 10pm which is a little difficult with teenage boys as lots of families with little ones there.

不喜欢 Only downside was the showers not great in main toilet block. Very difficult to shower the kids with only a dribble coming out in all directions
Need some shelves in the toilets and by the sinks for toiletries

喜欢 We absolutely loved this site, the lake was beautiful! They had a small coffee shop next to it, which was a little expensive but delicious! The shower and toilet cubicles were very clean too.
Beautiful setting, and we did the beach walk from the site, which was also lovely, the sign directions weren’t very well positioned but with the help from iPhone maps we made it.
I would definitely return.

喜欢 The fresh water stream with stunning dragon flies. The kids & 2 adults enjoyed the lake, whilst the other adults enjoyed the peace & sun. The kids play area & ball games field.

不喜欢 This campsite is definitely a money orientated run place. It was absolutely rammed, with no room between other campers. Not enough showers/toilets for the amount of campers on site.

喜欢 The lake is wonderful - perfect for families for paddle boards and swimming. The site is spotlessly clean and well staffed with lovely helpful people. The new sauna is brilliant and well worth the £16 for an hour’s treat. The dog walking areas are perfect.

不喜欢 A couple more toilets and showers near the lake would be good. Please the toilets have proper lighting? The little lights aren’t strong enough or didn’t work. Also sinks for brushing teeth that aren’t in the washing up area would be good!

There is one ladder into the lake for sauna users only. Better access - steps with hand rails or ladders at other jetties would be so helpful for those
With more limited mobility. The jetty/slipway is crazy slippery and the other access points are exceedingly muddy or jetties you need to pull yourself up out of.

Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
