Giggleswick Scar! What a glorious name for, well, anything, and one that makes us break into fits of chortles every time we hear it. If you go camping in Settle and like to fully delve into things, you’re laughing: the cliffs and caves of Giggleswick Scar are among the many Yorkshire Dales climbing and subterranean opps within tramping distance. Hang around Settle’s Castleberg Crag too for 24 climbing routes and views of the town, and if you’re at the height of fitness, have a go at scaling the mighty Three Peaks within a few miles’ walk.
We’re also more than a little bit in love with Settle for its art gallery in a phone kiosk, a concept that tickles us mightily (make for Linton Court Gallery for exhibitions of a more conventional size), and for the Settle to Carlisle Railway, chuffing along through 73 miles of the lovely landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines. If you’re booking a Settle campsite, make time too for a mooch around its Tuesday market and a cuppa in The Naked Man, possibly the oldest café in the country.
