When you’re looking for a slice of country living under canvas, but equally well can’t face pottering down too many country lanes, Ellis’ Hill Farm Campsite will suit you very well. Just double check the directions on your way there, as satnav may direct you through a ford and you don’t want to end up with a car issue.
 At 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire, this peaceful farm site is close to several major road networks. Even better news – for the kids if not your pocket – it’s within half an hour by car of family attractions like Legoland Windsor Resort and Beale Wildlife Park. Sheltered by tall trees, the camping field is mostly level with a few undulations. You’ll need sturdy footwear, and as it’s only mown once a year, if you’re a repeat visitor you’ll see how the meadow grows through the seasons. Also be aware that there’s no electricity to hand, so bring torches for wandering around your pitch after dark.
 The surrounding woodland is a fascinating habitat for wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the odd deer or sneaky fox – just please make sure your food is stored away from all animal foragers. Barbecues are allowed on site, but of course you can also sneak off to the two local pubs (both around five minutes’ drive) for a pint and helpings of comfort food. Dogs are welcome on site when kept on a lead at all times.

Gostou We liked the quietness of the site, and also the owners were there to welcome us when we arrived and direct us on to the field, the cafe was a bonus and you could buy produce aswell if you needed to. The two fields separated with a gate was good so you could have tents in one and vans in another, it was a lovely walking area and a bus stop for Reading town centre.

Não gostou We found the road leading up to the site was rather bumpy but manageable and there needs to be a sign to show a campsite as we drove past thinking it was just a cafe, the sink was on the floor not in use so maybe put it on the table so it could be connected up and use it.

Gostou Loads of space, relatively flat, barrows to take gear from car to pitch... seemed very relaxed. Saw deer, kites and lots of other wildllife.

Não gostou Track from main road needs some attention.

Gostou The people running the campsite are lovely, and very understanding if you get stuck and arrive late. Excellent bacon rolls available from the shop/cafe too.

We are always happy to accommodate latecomers as long as you keep in touch with us. We find that Legoland visitors often get stuck in traffic and we can offer alternative cross- country routes which can speed things up!

Gostou A lovely quiet site, plenty of space, breakfast rolls were great, easy walk to a ford, walks in woods, very close (by car) to a supermarket and Winnersh train station but felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. The owners were friendly and helpful.The facilities are basic but I think this is reflected in the price which is really good compared to most sites that charge per person.

Não gostou Taking rubbish and recycling home, but it made us think how much we produce so it was a good thing really.

We constantly review the shower situation, but it would be a big investment for us and we’re not really able to do that just now. We are looking at the possibility of building cubicles for solar showers for next season, so that campers could bring their own and have a bit of privacy.

Gostou It's a grassy field of which you could pitch your tent. Toilet was basic but clean and usable.

The kids will be pestering you for their day on the water rides, gentle rollercoasters and splash parks at Legoland Windsor Resort (half an hour’s drive), where they can also build their own Lego Ferrari. Once that’s done, no doubt Thorpe Park (45 minutes) and all its adrenaline-inducing thrill rides will be on their agenda too. If you hit the odd rainy day, you can catch blockbuster films at Showcase Cinema de Lux Reading (10 minutes), or take refuge on the lazy river and waterslides at under-cover Coral Reef Waterworld (25 minutes).
