Tucked onto 17 acres of private woodland 15 minutes’ drive from Carson in Washington state, Waterfall Sanctuary is in the Columbia River Gorge and bordered on two sides by the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. It’s home to a mini-farm with goats, ducks and free-range chickens – who supply fresh eggs for breakfast. Deer and elk roam through the property on a regular basis depending on the season, and it’s less than 10 minutes’ walk (or a short drive) to the Wind River, where there’s a swimming hole, and a little further takes you to the Pacific Crest Trail. As well as a variety of pitches tucked onto gravel hardstanding among the trees, Waterfall Sanctuary also offers a woodfired sauna, a store selling local produce and souvenirs, and a café serving breakfasts, pastries, snacks and drinks. Keep in mind when booking that the property is very rugged; however, there are gravel trails in between the tree-shaded pitches. The site is as off-grid and sustainable as possible; while electricity and running water are not provided at individual pitches, there is battery- or solar-operated lighting and a container of water. There are also outdoor showers for communal use. A maximum of two dogs is permitted at each pitch; due to the presence of wildlife in the area, they must be kept on a lead at all times while on the property. On departure, please throw all rubbish into the bins provided and make sure your pitch is as you found it.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

When it comes to exploring off the property, 20 minutes’ drive takes you to the majestic Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, where you can hike, go mountain biking and ride horses through dramatic mountain landscapes. A little closer to home are the trailheads leading from the impressive waterfalls at Falls Creek and Panther Creek (both 20 minutes’ drive), and you can also follow sections of the Pacific Crest Trail (25 minutes). If you have young kids with you, introduce them to hiking with easy ambles in Wind River Arboretum (10 minutes), or take a kayak tour down the Columbia River. Hood River (35 minutes) is a gorgeous old-time riverside town that also happens to be the watersports hub of the western USA; you can go windsurfing, kiteboarding and paddleboarding on the river. The town closest to the property is Stevenson (25 minutes), which has stores, supermarkets and restaurants; you can also cruise the river on a vintage steamboat. If you’re in the mood for city life, Portland, Oregon is about an hour’s drive to the west, with its thriving café and brewing scene, theatres and galleries.
