You’ll be able to soak it up at all hours when staying at Llys-y-frân Lakeview Campsite – this family-friendly site is on the banks of Llys-y-frân Reservoir, with fabulous watery views (at their best at sunset, thanks to the site’s west-facing location). You may well want to spend a fair amount of time simply looking out over the lake while you’re here – perhaps from a table at the Lakeside Café, which serves up hot drinks and sweet treats as well as a lunchtime menu of hot food showcasing top-notch local produce. Alternatively, bring your fishing kit and settle in for a relaxed day trying to catch trout from the lakeshore or one of the electric boats. Got something more energetic in mind? You’ll be sorted too, as the terraced site slopes down to an activity centre where you can book kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding sessions or hire bikes to hit the lakeside path or mountain bike trails. For other land-based activities, have a go at archery or channel your inner Celt with some axe throwing. For the younger adventurers, there are off-road six-wheeler ‘Crazi Bugz’ vehicles to drive, a climbing wall and an adventure playground. For something slower-paced, try woodland walks from the site, or set out a feast at one of the picnic spots. Dogs are also catered for with an agility playground. Practical facilities include hot showers, toilets in the activity centre, chemical disposal point, a washing-up area, a gift shop and wifi in the visitor centre. The village of Rosebush (10 minutes’ drive) is home to a characterful pub offering a traditional Welsh experience.

Me gustó The beautiful location, well spaced picnic benches, easy access to lots of activities, incredibly friendly and helpful staff at the activity centre. Pitch level and with good grass and soft ground. Clean bathrooms.

No me gustó Pitches are all rather close so you can hear everyones crying children and barking dogs - not very peaceful by the tent.

No me gustó Ground was extremely difficult to get the awning pegs into due to stone base.
Very uncomfortable to walk on and you'd definitely need inflatable beds as the ground is too hard to camp directly on.

Me gustó A perfect family getaway.
The site is ideal for families, set in a beautiful location with fantastic facilities and welcoming staff. There was plenty to do, and the children thoroughly enjoyed our four-night stay. We will definitely be returning.

No me gustó We really enjoyed the site overall — it’s well-maintained, with good facilities and a great setting. However, our stay was impacted by a large group from the West Midlands who repeatedly ignored the 21:00 noise curfew. Despite the warden speaking to them on more than one occasion, the disturbance continued to the point where a few campers were on the verge of asking management to intervene more firmly.

To the site’s credit, they handled the situation as best they could, and the group ended up leaving early. It may be worth considering a mid-stay feedback form for guests to highlight any issues sooner, and perhaps implementing a “three strikes and out” policy to deal with persistent disruptions.

We’d love to return, as it’s otherwise a fantastic site — hopefully with a bit more peace and quiet next time.

Me gustó Great site, all the facilities you need, excellent for a family who love to ride bikes and be outdoors. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Lovely play park, plenty to do there!

No me gustó 9pm quite time little hard to get head round excited kids make it hard as it's still light other camper moaning come 21:15, expected to be in bed for 22:00. Said moaning campers didn't moan when their own kids making noise at half 6 in the morning

Me gustó I loved the site. It was small and intimate and there was plenty to do for our children aged 6-14. The lake, bike tracks and convenience of the cafe as well as clean amenities were amazing

No me gustó The one thing that ruined our holiday was that it was that we were not allowed to be social. We went with a big group and the evenings camping are usually spent having a drink, listening to some music and relaxing but we were told to turn everything off by 9pm and to go to bed at 10:30pm. This completely spoilt the holiday as we were constantly reprimanded like children. My 6 year old was still wanting to run about at 9pm but we were expected to stop playing games and go to bed. I really think this needs to be reviewed as the site itself has so much to offer despite the pitches being slightly small. If you like a social evening with friends- I’d pick another site.

There’s a lot to do on site, for sure – but there’s also plenty to keep you busy when venturing out into your surroundings. The Pembrokeshire coast, for example, is less than half an hour’s drive away, for beach days in the likes of Broad Haven (half an hour’s drive), the ever-popular Tenby or its neighbour Saundersfoot (both 40 minutes). Pembrokeshire’s packed with historic places to visit too, including the lovely little city of St Davids (40 minutes), with its ancient cathedral and Bishops’ Palace. Carew Castle & Tidal Mill (35 minutes) is also worth a visit, to hear the tale of the castle’s 2000-year history and see the only restored tidal mill in Wales. If that’s not the kind of thing your kids are keen on, perhaps instead plan trips to the Pembrokeshire Llama Sanctuary (15 minutes), Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour) or the action-packed Heatherton World of Activities (35 minutes) for things like paintballing, ziplines and crazy golf.
