Picked Pembrokeshire as your destination because of the scenery? You’ll be able to soak it up at all hours when staying at Llys-y-frân Lakeview Campsite – this family-friendly site is on the banks of Llys-y-frân Reservoir, with fabulous watery views (at their best at sunset, thanks to the site’s west-facing location). You may well want to spend a fair amount of time simply looking out over the lake while you’re here – perhaps from a table at the Lakeside Café, which serves up hot drinks and sweet treats as well as a lunchtime menu of hot food showcasing top-notch local produce. Alternatively, bring your fishing kit and settle in for a relaxed day trying to catch trout from the lakeshore or one of the electric boats. Got something more energetic in mind? You’ll be sorted too, as the terraced site slopes down to an activity centre where you can book kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding sessions or hire bikes to hit the lakeside path or mountain bike trails. For other land-based activities, have a go at archery or channel your inner Celt with some axe throwing. For the younger adventurers, there are off-road six-wheeler ‘Crazi Bugz’ vehicles to drive, a climbing wall and an adventure playground. For something slower-paced, try woodland walks from the site, or set out a feast at one of the picnic spots. Dogs are also catered for with an agility playground. Practical facilities include hot showers, toilets in the activity centre, chemical disposal point, a washing-up area, a gift shop and wifi in the visitor centre. The village of Rosebush (10 minutes’ drive) is home to a characterful pub offering a traditional Welsh experience.

Liked We had the BEST week camping here ❤️ my husband and I spent the week on our own with our dog and at the weekend my sister, wife and nephew joined us.

🏕️The camping side of the site is small so even if all the pitches are booked you don’t feel too crowded. The pitch sizes are really big so plenty of room to move about and relax outside of the tent.

🚿The facilities are top notch, they are similar to swimming pool changing rooms, very clean and roomy.

🛒There is a small shop onsite where you can buy essentials. There is an Aldi about a 20 min drive away.

🍽️ There is a lovely cafe looking over the water where you can get breakfast, lunch, cakes and drinks. Everything we had was very tasty.

🛶 There are plenty of activities to do if this is your thing and all are very good value for money. We did archery, kayaking and climbing and had a blast.

🦅 If you like wildlife, especially birds, this is the place to be. The site has SO many swallows and house martins. We also spotted heron, cormorants and red kites on the lake and so much more.

🙋🏻‍♀️ Every member of staff that we came in contact with was friendly, relaxed and so helpful. They really were excellent, I can’t say enough good words about them. Thank you everyone for making our stay so great ❤️

🐶 The site is very dog friendly, they can go in all areas and buildings. There is a dog agility area and also a dog menu in the cafe

Disliked I don’t have any dislikes but a wider selection a food items in the shop would be good as this would mean you wouldn’t need to leave the camp at all during your stay.

My only real dislike is that I had to go home 🙈

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are missing Henry

I wouldn’t return due to the light pollution and pitch size.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The facilities were clean. The manager was friendly and helpful. The bike track and activity centre were right on the doorstep.

Disliked The pitches were really small. There is lighting everywhere so unless you have a blackout tent take an eye mask as I probably could have read a book at 2am. The site manager allowed me to cover the light outside my tent with a towel on the second night, which helped a bit. No fire pits or bbqs allowed.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments. We are sorry you felt our pitches were 'Really Small. They do in fact measure 9x9M which is far larger than the standard 8x5m. We have taken on board your comments with regard to the lights.. BBQ's and Fires are not allowed due to the site being a conservation area (this is made clear when booking).

We will be back, enough said.

Liked We stayed for two nights. Kayaking on the lake was great as was the mountain biking with the off track runs. Facilities were excellent and in particular the toilets, showers and washing up area. The staff on-site were very helpful and friendly - they really went out of their way to make the stay special. The cafe and selection of food was varied with nice tasting chips and great flat white coffee:)

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words. I can concur the Flat Whites are great. We will pass your comments on to the cafe and activity teams.

Excellent site, friendly staff, quiet and clean facilities.

Liked It's a stunning and serene place to stay. The landscaping has been well thought out. The pitches are excellent. The shower facilities are spotless and have constant running water ........ seasoned campers will know that is a rarity. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Looking forward to our next visit 😀

I didn't take picture because they don't do the site justice ........ although a bride and groom arrived in a horse drawn carriage to have photos taken ....... speaks volumes

From the manager: Thank you so much for you lovely review. We are so pleased your had a great stay. We look forward to see you again

Unpowered concrete slab campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Location and facilities.

Disliked Kids playing ball sports on unoccupied pitches.
Sign written commercial vehicles on site.
Vehicles being parked next to caravans and tents, not adhering to the 6m rules.
Items being thrown for dogs to retrieve in the direction of unoccupied pitches.
Children arriving back on site, laden with trout, caught on spinners. (Did they even buy a fishing ticket, as they obviously didn't read the rules ?)
I had a breakfast which was really nice, but surely a pot of tea would constitute two tea bags compared to a cup that would include one? Not everyone likes weak tea!
As someone that abides by rules, that I presume you stipulate for a reason, it doesn't sit well with me.
If there's no catch return, and no one checking who's fishing and whether they have a permit, then who knows what the stock levels are?
I hope you find my reply useful?

Liked The location is fantastic, DCWW have done a great job of turning an important water resource into a tourist destination. The campsite was clean, pitches were generous in size.

Disliked Slightly narrow to get a tourer in if you haven’t got a motor mover (or someone to guide you in).

From the manager: Thank you so much for your kind words.

Local attractions

There’s a lot to do on site, for sure – but there’s also plenty to keep you busy when venturing out into your surroundings. The Pembrokeshire coast, for example, is less than half an hour’s drive away, for beach days in the likes of Broad Haven (half an hour’s drive), the ever-popular Tenby or its neighbour Saundersfoot (both 40 minutes). Pembrokeshire’s packed with historic places to visit too, including the lovely little city of St Davids (40 minutes), with its ancient cathedral and Bishops’ Palace. Carew Castle & Tidal Mill (35 minutes) is also worth a visit, to hear the tale of the castle’s 2000-year history and see the only restored tidal mill in Wales. If that’s not the kind of thing your kids are keen on, perhaps instead plan trips to the Pembrokeshire Llama Sanctuary (15 minutes), Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour) or the action-packed Heatherton World of Activities (35 minutes) for things like paintballing, ziplines and crazy golf.
