Opened in 2021, 59 Degrees North Motorhome Aire is Orkney’s first dedicated motorhome park, with overnighting space for a handful of self-contained touring motorhomes. With sea views on three sides, this is a family-run business set in a five-acre wildflower meadow on spectacular Sanday, one of the most northerly islands in Orkney. The park is a five-minute walk (the dogs will love it) from the sea at Roos Wick bay, looking out over a scattering of neighbouring islands including Eday, Westray and Papa Westray. You can see a number of lighthouses from this panoramic and untamed spot too. Facilities on site include black and grey waste-emptying facilities, a fresh water filling point and electric hook-ups. And just a couple words of warning here: there are no loos or showers at the site, and although motorhomes of all sizes are welcome to rock up, vans over eight metres in length may struggle to access the beaches due to the size of the island’s roads. And there’s absolutely no need to arrive loaded up with food and drink, as there are two really well-stocked shops on the island – you can support them by sourcing food, drink, souvenirs and fuel on Sanday itself.

Dominated by sand dunes and the sea, Sanday is nirvana if you’re a wildlife lover, so keep your eyes peeled for a (hopeful) chance to spot terns and hen harriers, as well as grey seals (they have pups in November), otters and red deer. This place is also all about the beaches – fine sweeps of white sand backed by blue seas. Check tide times and hike the dunes at Tresness (15 minutes’ drive), a long sandy spit that you’ll likely have to yourselves. Other spots for a picnic with views include Whitemill Bay and Backaskaill Bay – and you can poke around caves at Doun Helzie (all 10 minutes) at low tide. If archaeology floats your boat, then you’ve come to the right place. Sanday is a historic hotspot, with numerous sites like the Neolithic Quoyness Chambered Cairn (20 minutes) dating back around 4,000 years – and you can just walk right on inside. There are Viking remains to check out at Scar Boat Burial, and the restored croft at Sanday Heritage Centre (both 10 minutes) gives you a peek into the island’s farming past.

Parcela de césped y gravilla con electricidad para autocaravana

Me gustó: Clean, tidy well organised with level pitches. Beautiful wild flower field. An unexpected and welcome surprise to have use of a beautiful bathroom. Great breakfast in cafe. Location is fantastic!

No me gustó: Cafe not open in evening so unable to take advantage of great stone baked pizza as we were out all day.
