Casting about for a peaceful holiday? Hook yourself a spot for a stay at Riverside Caravan Park, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough. Down a quiet country lane, and on the banks of the river Derwent, this is a top site for finding a bit of calm: it's the kind of place where you can listen to the river as it flows by, hear the sounds of the countryside drifting across the fields from neighbouring farms, and maybe nab a patch of riverbank for some fishing. Music fans might gravitate towards the Scarborough Fair Collection, 15 minutes away, while others might prefer visits to the town’s beach, aquarium, Italian gardens, open-air theatre or golf courses. Want to steer clear of the seaside entirely? Turn instead to North York Moors National Park, less than five minutes from base, for hiking and biking trails, scenic towns and villages, and some fab heritage railways. Guests keen on keeping getaways low-key and low-on-travel are well served here. The site’s about half a mile from the village of East Ayton, where basic supplies can be sorted in the small convenience store, hungers can be satisfied in the restaurant or chip shop, and thirsts can be quenched in the pub. East Ayton’s also where those of a more exploratory disposition should go for local buses to the coast. Back on site, there are ladies' and gents' loos, electric showers, and two taps for fresh drinking water.

Me gustó The location was nice, plenty to do in the surrounding areas animals were gorgeous, nice people.

No me gustó As many people have said, unfortunately the toilets and showers were dirty. We were there for 4 nights and I don’t think they were cleaned once. There was no hand soap in any toilet and on a few occasions no toilet roll in any toilet. It’s such a shame really as the toilets and showers themselves are fundamentally nice but they just could use a lick of paint and a regular clean as well as being supplied with hand soap and constant toilet roll. Everything else was nice.

Me gustó Quiet and clean site , small and peaceful. Lizzie text me the day before to tell me my pitch number - the pitches are well spaced out and clearly marked . Great location for a base to explore / visit attractions . Showers and toilets clean . Safe field for the grandchildren to play in and ride their bikes around, plus they LOVED the goats , ponies and donkeys in the paddock !

No me gustó No where to walk the dog ! The site was off a small lane but other than walking on the road/lane there were no local footpaths or bridle ways marked

No me gustó No warden on site, neglected dirty shower block and toilets, large groups of teenagers partying until the early hours, litter strewn about, not electric in toilet block so not lit at night and electric hook up stopped working in the middle of the night. Site not fit for purpose.

Me gustó We had electric hook up, and had a good choice of pitch’s in the field. The river was very dry which meant the animals in the paddock up the way, were able to walk through the river, down to the field where we were camping.
We didn’t mind this at all personally but it’s something to be aware of. (July 2026). We had a dog with us, she is very well behaved but again, if you have a dog it may be something to consider with the donkeys, Shetland ponies and goats roaming free.
For us personally, it made the whole camping experience even better but it’s maybe not for everyone.

The owner Lizzy was very friendly, good communication when calling or messaging.
We luckily found her number from driving to the camp site to check out local amenities. As the number on pitch up is not the same as the number on the board. Board is correct number.

The site is quite basic but is very clean, having 3 large shower rooms which are lovely and clean. 3 unisex toilets also. The field is very flat which makes for setting up your tent a lot easier too.

No me gustó I personally didn’t dislike this as the site was quiet when we visited. However if it was a busier time, it would be something to be aware of… there are 3 unisex toilets/washroom. So if it got busy, I could see this been a bit of a problem. Again, not a dislike. As I can’t really fault anything with our visit and experience.

Sticking close by to start with, anyone who simply can’t get enough of fishing can make the five-minute drive to Wykeham Lakes fishery to land trout, carp, perch and bream, while those who are happiest out in nature should pay a visit to Burton Riggs Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) for wanders and birdwatching. Further afield, travels to the coast come highly recommended. It’s 20 minutes from base to the coastal town of Filey, where there are beaches to sprawl or stroll on, plus a museum, an animal park and birdwatching areas. The town’s also the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way walking trail. A 40-minute drive up the coast leads to Whitby, a coastal town that inspired major elements of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head this way for more sandy stretches, the spectacularly spooky Whitby Abbey and (during well-timed stays) the Whitby Goth Weekend. If Whitby Abbey inspired an interest in seeing more stunning old buildings, there are plenty nearby to choose from: it’s 35 minutes to Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall, 40 minutes to the marvellous Castle Howard (featured in Brideshead Revisited) and 50 minutes to Rievaulx Abbey.
