  • Family-friendly, comfortable and peaceful countryside campsite
  • A 55-minute drive to Lake Mburo National Park; 35 minutes to Mbarara
  • Games room, play area and TV room on site, plus a restaurant and shop
Going on safari? At less than an hour’s drive from Lake Mburo National Park in western Uganda, Rushozi Campground puts you pretty close to a very good chance of seeing zebras, hyenas and leopards in their natural surroundings. With a lush setting 35 minutes’ drive from the lively city of Mbarara, the campsite is all set up for comfortable and leisurely stays. If you haven’t all worn yourselves out on hiking and biking adventures (you can rent bikes on site) or tracking wild animals, younger offspring can have a romp around at the play area, and there’s a games room where older kids can make friends of their own age. Facilities include showers and a launderette – more than handy for a clean up after all those daily exertions – and if you need to put your feet up, simply retire to the guest lounge and find your favourite programme on the satellite TV. Best of all, you don’t need to worry about organising any catering, as there’s a bar and terrace restaurant too – although should you prefer to cook, you can pick up basics at the handy on-site grocery shop and head to the barbecue area for outdoor cooking.

Local attractions

You’ll probably want to spend all your time outdoors, and the first port of call may well be Lake Mburo National Park (55 minutes’ drive), where you can join game drives to see muddy hippos and stately giraffes, go sport fishing for tilapia and perch, or explore the bush and lakeshore on horseback. And birders keep your binoculars at the ready for sightings of storks, pelicans and crested cranes. Get the lie of the land with a climb up to the three-pillared Biharwe Eclipse Monument (15 minutes), a local landmark celebrating the eclipse of 1520 AD, for views across fertile fields to distant foothills. Head into Mbarara to pick up souvenirs at Safariland Park mall, or visit the Nkokonjeru Tombs (both 35 minutes), where leaders of the former Ankole Kingdom are buried. To learn more about the local area and its tradition of cattle herding, spend time at Igongo Cultural Center (15 minutes), where you can peek inside reconstructed traditional dwellings of the indigenous Ankole people and taste local dishes.
