  • Well-kept site on the banks of Lac de Neuchâtel in Grandson
  • Yverdon-les-Bains 10 minutes' drive; half an hour to Vallorbe Caves
  • Beach area and paddleboard hire on site; restaurant next door
Keen on watersports? Or just like a lovely lake view for your chilled-out holiday downtime? Both options can be part of your day when you stay at Camping Le Pécos, on the banks of Lac de Neuchâtel in Grandson. This is the largest lake in Switzerland, so it’s no surprise to find that the views here are pretty fabulous – and you'll be able to admire them all day long if you like, settling down at the lake beach area and perhaps venturing into the water from time to time to cool off. There's also a beach volleyball court if you'd rather indulge your competitive side, plus a boat ramp where you can launch kayaks or small boats – and you can rent paddleboards to take out on the water too. Back on dry land, there’s a play area in the campsite (and another two next door), a couple of pétanque courts and three ping pong tables, along with a small number of bikes to rent. Tennis, climbing and a trampoline gym are a short walk away, if you need a bit more activity in your day. And the lake isn’t the only scenic feature in the area, so you can plan days of hiking nearby too. Sounds like you’ll need to stay well fed to get through all these activities… and handily that should be fairly easy to do as the site has a well-stocked mini market with plenty of essentials alongside local produce (meats, cheeses, baked goods and beers among them). There's also a restaurant next door that's particularly well known for its lake perch fillets.

Local attractions

The town of Grandson should be your first visit – the town centre is a lovely 15-minute lakeside walk away and home to the medieval Château de Grandson, the second-largest castle in Switzerland. Heading in the other direction, Yverdon-les-Bains (10 minutes' drive/45 minutes' walk) is another lovely town with a castle, the fashion-themed Espace Robert Piguet-Musée suisse de la Mode and the science fiction museum Maison d’Ailleurs as well as the thermal baths that gave the town its name. For other days out, you may like to hit the track at Karting Vuiteboeuf (10 minutes' drive), hike through the Covatannaz Gorges (10 minutes) or go underground at Vallorbe Caves (half an hour). An hour's hike to the top of Le Chasseron (half an hour) gives gorgeous views over the lake; for something more family friendly try the nature trails at Forêvasion (15 minutes), designed by kids for kids.
