The lush, lovely, Île de Ré… a land of beaches and bike paths, dunes and pine forests, oyster markets and – possibly – a bit of celeb spotting: this is a top French pick for rich and famed types as well as swish sorts coming over from Paris. You'll want to be by the beach when staying on this scenic little isle, so set yourself down at Camping Seasonova Les Portes en Ré, 200 metres from the sands of La Plage du Groc Jonc. (Even better if you're here on a family holiday, as Groc Jonc is nicknamed the 'beach for children' and has three kids' clubs on the beach to entertain offspring from toddlers to teens, as well as a swimming club and lessons for ages four and up.) Start your island day with a French breakfast, suggest the Camping Île de Ré owners, by using the handy croissant and pain au chocolat ordering service at reception, before heading off out to explore (via the beach, of course), or opting for a day on site lazing around the grounds or with a spot of yoga, mediation or gym at the wellness centre. There's a bar to lounge around at too – or you could bag up your supplies and beer to take down to the beach…? Or to local town Les Portes-en-Ré, less than half a kilometre away; a trip to the daily market in Freedom Square will add oysters to your alfresco haul too. A food truck for takeaways visits the site twice a week.

Liked: Really near the beach, lots of trees and shade on the site and Porte's en Ré is such a beautiful little place. Fantastic to visit off season.

Disliked: Toilet cleaning was a bit hit and miss. Bring Mossie repellant - they are voracious!

Liked: Very clean toilets and showers with provision of hand soap and toilet tissue. Smaller accessible bar and pool. Good sized pitches, clearly marked. Very close to a lovely beach. Clean and tidy with good facilities Best of all the young lady on reception,she is excellent. Extremely helpful and diligent.

Disliked: Mosquitos. Bring personal spray. Weak Wi-Fi.

Liked: Close to a lovely town, staff friendly and helpful. Quiet beach.

Disliked: Communal Toilets and showers filthy, I went all different times, not once were they clean. The bar opens about 5pm and only serves 4 beers all bottles. No wine, puzzled me we are in France. And closes at 8pm, every night. I have reduced mobility, so going into town for a drink after dinner was a trek.

Liked: The site is right next to a lovely big beach and a beautiful little village centre, with a daily market. There is loads to visit in the surrounding area.

Disliked: Pitches are not very big or private. The site has a very cluttered appearance. Pitches are sandy and dusty. The toilets are cleaned between 8am and 9.30am, just when people want to use the facilities. This was a big problem.

Liked: Small site with everything you need (e.g. pool and bar) in lovely village of Les Portes en Re. Beaches and village centre (where we had a lovely meal one night) all within a short walk. Island itself also lovely and definitely worth a visit (although very busy, especially with cyclists, in August).

Disliked: Toilets etc seemed clean enough but there was a sewage-like smell.

Local attractions

The local beach has a club for under-threes, another for ages four to nine, and a third for ages 10 to 13. The beach also has a swimming club giving lessons by a qualified instructor in a freshwater pool. Cyclists can hire bikes on site to set off on the bike path around the island, through wildlife havens and along coastline via teeny villages and oyster farms. If you're up for a lengthy cycle, it's 21 kilometres to the island's main centre Saint-Martin-de-Ré, to see the local representation of the 12 Vauban fortifications UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by a lazy meal at a bistro on the quay. (If you're not up for a lengthy cycle, Saint-Martin is about 25 minutes by car.) The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge of two and a half kilometres; cross back over for a day in La Rochelle, about 55 minutes away.
