  • Family site with Plomb du Cantal mountain views and winter skiing
  • Super Lioran ski resort 15 minutes’ drive; Aurillac 45 minutes
  • Heated swimming pool, fly fishing lake and summer snack bar
With a dramatic mountain backdrop, Camping Le Vallagnon sits in the volcanic Auvergne region’s Plomb du Cantal foothills. And thanks to its handy location a 10-minute drive from the resort of Super Lioran, it’s a top spot for both summer hiking and skiing in winter. Spacious pitches with running water and electrical connections (15 amp) are dotted among mature trees, and you can pick up free wifi hotspots around the site. You can buy supplies 10 minutes' walk away in Laveissière village and get grilling on the barbecue (bring your own). There’s a simple snack bar on site in summer too. In July and August, life at this Alagnon Valley site revolves around the heated swimming pool – just the spot for lounging in the sun and cooling off with an occasional dip. Kids can run off energy on the football field, play table tennis or challenge neighbours to a game of pétanque. There’s seasonal fly fishing on the lake, and sporty types can disappear into the hills on foot or mountain bike. In winter, the snow takes over. Get the kids up on skis on gentle pistes at Super Lioran, take them ice skating or surprise them with a dog-sled ride. And if you’re simply not that into skiing, cosy restaurants serving vin chaud and regional dishes made with Cantal cheeses are always on standby. After all this activity in mountain air, it’s good to know that plenty of hot water awaits in the shower block back on site. Other amenities intended to make your life easier include dishwashers and a launderette with washing machine and dryer.

Local attractions

Camping Le Vallagnon may be a haven for walkers, mountain bikers and skiers up at Super Lioran (15 minutes’ drive), but there are oodles of other things to do in the Auvergne. Keeping with the outdoor theme, you can fly high with the birds when paragliding in Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne (10 minutes) or go canyoning along the Gorges de la Jordanne (40 minutes). For less energetic days out, keep your feet firmly on the ground with strolls around ancient Aurillac village (45 minutes) and pop into its Volcano Museum to learn about the geography of the area. Take a guided tour of weaponry and frescoes in Tournemire’s Château d’Anjony (an hour), and pop into Saint-Flour’s (30 minutes) Cathedral of St Peter to peek at a famous 12th-century statue of Christ, carved from walnut. If the kids deserve a break from all that cultural stuff, let them loose on the Alpine Coaster toboggan, scooting downhill through mountain meadows from Lioran Aventure (10 minutes).

Electric optional grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Nice large stream side pitch with plenty of shade. Heated, clean toilet/shower block. Use of two pool in municipal swimming pool, just by the campsite. Pool could be very busy with children at certain time of the day.

Disliked: Positioning of power, extra long leads needed. Noise from adjacent main road.
