  • Dog-friendly pods each with wet room and well-equipped kitchen
Hankering after a glamping adventure in gorgeous rural Wales? And one that accepts dogs to boot? You’ll like the sound of the wooden pods at Buckholt House Farm Glamping near Monmouth, on a working Welsh sheep farm with lovely views of fields and forest thrown in. Each glamping pod sleeps up to five people (in a double bed and triple-sleeper bunk), and has an ultra-spacious, open-plan design where you can eat, catch up on work (if you must), cook in the fabulously well-equipped kitchen and chill out at your own pace. Inside each pod is a wet room with a flushing toilet and power shower. There’s lots of storage inside for your bits and pieces, and extras like a mirror, a hair dryer and bed linen are provided. You will, however, need to bring your own towels – and perhaps some binoculars for wildlife spotting and a bag of charcoal for barbecuing in the firepit in the private garden. Dogs are welcome, but must be under control around the resident dogs and livestock. There are local woods with public footpaths for walks, and an off-lead exercise area for hire on a farm nearby. Please note that there is a relatively steep gravel path up to the pods. If you’re arriving by car, there is parking on site. Otherwise there are buses and a taxi service from Monmouth (five minutes’ drive), where you can also pick up all your shopping.

Walnut camping pod (no pets)

Liked: We had a wonderful couple of nights in one of the pods at Buckholt Farm. They were perfect for our family of 4 with two young children. The view was incredible from the pods, and they had everything we needed for a lovely stay. It’s a beautiful area with loads to see and do - autumn was a nice time to visit as the trees were changing colour.

Walnut camping pod (no pets)

Liked: The pod was big compared to other pods we have stayed in, and that extra space made it much more comfortable to stay in. The rural views from it were delightful, and the little landscaped patio with firepit and bench were lovely. There was a screen between us and the other pod which made it private. The wye valley was a short drive away, and so the location was good for us.

Willow camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: We have just returned from a wonderful week in a buckholt house farm pod. We wished we'd booked to stay for longer. The accomodation was well thought out so that everything you needed fit into the small space. I particularly liked the fact that the main bed was raised so that all our luggage (and there was a lot, for a family of two adults, three children and a dog!) Could fit underneath. The view and the tranquility of the site were stunning. The hosts were very relaxed about our working cocker spaniel running about the place and it was great having a fence around the perimeter of the pod area so we knew our children were kept close (not that we could see any dangers nearby if they had stayed further). The site sits directly on a footpath and the owners have added extra routes through their own land so you can take a shorter loop to wear out the dog! We even let our 11yr old walk the dog alone as we felt so remote and safe and the structure of the valley meant that even on her half hour loop walk we could see her from the pod the whole way. The BBQ and wood supplied was so welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our alfresco dining and BBQs. One evening we had an Indian takeaway which was fine, another we all ate on the upstairs terrace of the Italian in the high street (the owners recommend this) it was absolutely fabulous. The dog was allowed to sit with us, the food was delicious and the place is decorated so flamboyantly - we felt like we were on holiday abroad. We'll definitely be back and next time we'll book both pods for a larger family trip all to ourselves.

Disliked: Going home

Willow camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: The location was perfect, a short drive to Symonds Yat and an even shorter drive to Monmouth. The views from the pod were incredible, it was so peaceful, and a great space for our pup to have a run around. The pods themselves had everything we could need, we loved the binoculars and bird book that were left for our use. And it was great seeing the tractors making hay bales on our last day! We all thoroughly enjoyed our trip and plan to come back again soon!

Local attractions

A stay at Buckholt House Farm Glamping gives you the chance to explore two countries in one day – the border between Wales and England passes through the field right next to the pods. See how that border was once fiercely fought over at defence castles like Goodrich Castle on the English side or head to Raglan Castle (both 15 minutes’ drive), firmly back in Wales. Follow that same border along Offa’s Dyke Path (five minutes) or hit the walks and cycling routes taking in the circular sculpture trail in the Forest of Dean (20 minutes). Ramp up your sporty adventures with kayaking along the River Wye (five minutes), try a tandem paragliding flight from Blorenge (half an hour), go whitewater rafting at Symonds Yat (15 minutes) or hang around on treetop ropes courses at Go Ape Mallards Pike (half an hour). When you’ve had enough of leaping around in the fresh air, take yourselves off to Monmouth (five minutes’ drive). Sitting at the confluence of the Wye and Monnow rivers, historic sites include a couple of landmark bridges straddling the waters, the castle and neighbouring Regimental Museum. The town is also a pretty spot for browsing indie shops and hanging out in waterfront pubs.
